You will be joining a great QLD State Government team and taking the first steps in what we would see as a sensational career-level opportunity. With an initial contract until 30th June, you will work toward securing the extension which will very likely be offered to extend onwards.
As Biosecurity Officer, you will be joining the Plant Biosecurity and Product Integrity (PB&PI) team, where you will facilitate trade for businesses who work with commodities being exported interstate. This work is done through inspections and certification services carried out by Biosecurity Officers for pests and diseases such as fire ants.
In this key role, your days will be full of energy and partnerships, undertaking tasks such as:
- Assisting the team to achieve efficient and effective delivery of operational goals following relevant standard operating procedures.
- Assisting the team to undertake tasks contributing to the protection of the Queensland biosecurity system by conducting field-based inspection, monitoring, surveillance, and information gathering.
- Providing government inspection services to facilitate interstate market access.
- Conducting surveillance and collecting data and samples to support national and state-based plant pest and disease projects.
- Assisting stakeholders to manage biosecurity risks associated with diseases and pests.
- Work with external stakeholders to facilitate their legislative compliance by responding to technical enquires and providing accurate and timely technical advice reflecting relevant policy.
- Developing and maintaining effective working relationships with relevant internal and external stakeholders to promote biosecurity risk management and government policy.

Mandatory requirements
- It is a mandatory requirement for a technical officer to possess an Australian Diploma or Associate Diploma or higher qualification in a relevant field (e.g., agriculture or environment)
- For international qualifications, the applicant will need their qualification assessed, to determine comparability with the Australian Qualifications Framework. The Department of Employment, Small Business and Training can assist with these assessments for Queensland residents.
- A current ‘C’ class drivers’ licence

- Previous experience with, or appointment under any legislation.
- Previous experience carrying out field-based inspections or surveillance
Position specific information
- This position will undertake inspection of produce and machinery that will require walking over uneven terrain, outdoors in hot environments.
