About UNSW IT and the role:

UNSW IT is part of the Operations Division at UNSW. The IT team at UNSW plays a critical role in enabling the University’s teaching, research, and industry engagement. Would you be keen to make a difference and work in higher education ?

The Cloud Financial Operations (FinOps) Subject Matter Expert (SME) plays a critical role in the managing and optimising UNSW Cloud budgeting, consumption, optimisation and ensuring the Cloud platform is financially sustainable. The role will ensure cost optimisation, driving a culture of proactive cost management rather than reactive cost reduction for all cloud infrastructure services. The focus will be on optimising the financial management of the UNSW Cloud platforms, ensuring maximum value from cloud investments.

The Cloud FinOps SME will work closely with the Head of Cloud Business Office, Cloud Architect, Cloud Platform Engineering team and other stakeholders to monitor cloud spending, identify cost optimisation opportunities, and drive financial proficiencies in the platform’s operation. The Cloud FinOps SME has a critical role as it ensures the smooth and efficient operation of UNSW cloud-based systems and applications. By proactively managing and monitoring cloud spend, this role enables seamless business operations and customer satisfaction.

The role reports to the Head of Cloud Business Office

Who You Are:

  • Tertiary qualification in Computer Technology (or equivalent), supplemented with demonstrated success in an IT environment and managing multiple complex projects in a large and diverse organisation and subsequent relevant experience.
  • Strong understanding of cloud costs, and ability to identify cloud costs for showback and chargeback using resource tags.
  • Knowledge of Cloud cost management principles, tools, and best practices to ensure efficient use of resources and minimize expenditure.
  • Experience in developing, implementing, and maintaining financial operational strategies, policies, and procedures for Cloud-based environments.
  • Proficiency in using Cloud cost management, monitoring tools and best practices (e.g., AWS Cost Explorer, Azure Cost Management, GCP Cloud Billing, Cloudability) to track, analyse, and report on Cloud expenses.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills to identify cost optimisation opportunities and provide recommendations for improvement.
  • Excellent communication, collaboration, and stakeholder management skills to work closely with Product Managers, engineers, and other team members in promoting cost-awareness and implementing cost-saving measures.
  • Ability to create and maintain budgets, forecasts, and financial reports related to Cloud platform usage and expenses.
  • Familiarity with Cloud pricing models, contracts, and vendor negotiation strategies to secure the best possible terms and conditions.
  • Continuous learning mindset to stay up-to-date with industry trends, emerging technologies, and best practices in Cloud infrastructure services and Financial Operations.
  • Proficiency in troubleshooting and resolving technical issues in a cloud environment paired with strong analytical and problem-solving skills with high attention to detail.
  • Advanced written and verbal communication skills, with ability to influence and negotiate at a senior level.
  • Familiarity with ITIL or other IT service management frameworks.

  • Advanced understanding of cloud computing concepts and architectures, with hands on experience in major cloud platforms such as AWS or Azure.
  • An understanding of and commitment to UNSW’s aims, objectives and values in action, together with relevant policies and guidelines.
  • Knowledge of health and safety responsibilities and commitment to attending relevant health and safety training.
