Job description

We are looking for a dynamic senior executive leader with a proven track record of success in policing and law enforcement services. 
  
Through your leadership, you will improve community safety through effective policing and crime prevention strategies. 
  
You will implement the Commission of Inquiry into Queensland Police Service (QPS) response to domestic and family violence recommendations to deliver culture change to the Police Service
  
You will ensure the safe and effective transition of disaster and emergency management and State Emergency Services into QPS and establish Marine Rescue Queensland. 
  
About the Queensland Police Service
QPS is the primary law enforcement agency for Queensland. It fulfils this role throughout the state, 24 hours a day, seven days a week, 365 days a year, upholding the law and assisting the community, particularly in times of emergency, disaster and crisis.  
  
Service areas 
QPS focuses on, reducing, responding to, and preventing the incidence of, crime, public disorder and road trauma to build safe, caring and connected communities. These are delivered through one service area, Police Services – to keep Queensland safe by working with the community and our partners to prevent, disrupt and respond to, and investigate crime and eliminate road trauma. 
  
Role and resources 
Primarily, QPS provides services to the Queensland community designed to uphold and administer the law responsibly, fairly and efficiently. They also preserve peace and good order; to protect and support the community. QPS prioritises the safety of the community including the safety of victim survivors of domestic and family violence and other serious offences through all activities. Additionally, QPS efforts prevent, disrupt, respond to, and investigate crime; as well as promote road safety and to work toward fair, just and lasting outcomes for victims and offenders.  
  
This includes, but is not limited to: 

  • responding to survivors of domestic, family and other serious offences through a victim-centric, trauma informed and culturally safe approach and working with partners to ensure perpetrators are held to account 
  • protecting property and personal safety through prevention, disruption, investigation and response 
  • maintaining public order and safety including during major events and disasters 
  • working with partners to reduce demand on the criminal justice system by reducing offending by over-represented and vulnerable groups, including First Nations people 
  • preventing, disrupting and responding to driver behaviours contributing to road trauma: speeding; red light offences; driving while distracted; driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs; driving while fatigued; and not wearing seatbelts. 
As Commissioner of the Queensland Police Service, you will: 
  • provide strategic leadership that demonstrates a clear and compelling vision for the agency and its employees 
  • be responsible for the efficient and proper administration, management and functioning of the Police Service in accordance with law 
  • preserve and build productive working relationships with stakeholders, identifying tactful and diplomatic management practices to support their differing and competing requirements and priorities  
  • mobilise effective and efficient governance, administration and operation of the agency, fostering an environment of accountability for the performance of its functions and associated outcomes 
  • coordinate the appropriate services required to ensure the Minister is positioned to deliver the priorities set out in the Ministerial Charter Letter for the QPS 
  • pursue with transparency, the administration of the agency’s legislation to promote their purpose, and encouraging innovation through understanding of the principal responsibilities required to deliver the Queensland Government's objectives for the community 
  • model to the highest level, standards of ethical behaviour, operating with transparency in decision making, establishing consistency for the application of these practices 
  • lead through awareness, demonstrating clear rationale to exemplary problem solving and decision-making practices, encouraging the sectors ongoing commitment to equity, diversity and inclusion.
