Appointment Pool

We are seeking to establish a pool for appointments to permanent and fixed term, full-time vacancies which may arise during 2024 and up until the end of March 2025. Appointments can be made from the pool at any time for commencements within 2024, up until the end of March 2025.

The Role and our Branch

The Aboriginal Teaching and Learning Directorate is seeking to recruit highly motivated and committed Consultants to join our team. 

We are seeking culturally responsive officers who are committed to equity, anti-racism and systems thinking. As a Consultant, you will support the work of the Directorate to strengthen the professional capability of Department staff to embed culturally responsive practices and mindsets into their work.

The Consultant contributes to the development, implementation and evaluation of strategies, initiatives and approaches that strengthen the wellbeing, engagement and achievement of Aboriginal students. 

In this role, you will assist in providing advice and guidance to schools and Department staff to support the provision of culturally responsive approaches and strengthened engagement with Aboriginal families, communities and organisations. 

Suitable applicants should have the ability to work collaboratively in a small team environment and experience working with Aboriginal stakeholders.

Who are we

The Aboriginal Teaching and Learning Directorate leads and influences the development of cultural responsiveness across the organisation. Our objective is to ensure that the research, design, delivery and evaluation of policies, programs and services are informed by whole-of-government priorities including the Aboriginal Empowerment Strategy 2021-2029 and the Department’s Aboriginal Cultural Standards Framework.

  1. Demonstrated knowledge of the strengths, issues and needs of Aboriginal children, families and communities and experience in applying that knowledge to the education sector.
  2. Demonstrated well developed organisational, planning and task management skills, including the ability to prioritise tasks to meet deadlines.
  3. Demonstrated well developed conceptual and analytical skills and ability to identify strengths, opportunities and approaches to building the capacity of schools to strengthen cultural responsiveness to Aboriginal students.
  4. Demonstrated well developed facilitation, negotiation and consultation skills with a proven ability to work collaboratively and maintain effective working relationships within, and external to the Department, including with Aboriginal stakeholder groups and networks.
  5. Demonstrated well developed verbal and written communication skills, including the ability to liaise effectively with stakeholders at all levels.
  6. Demonstrated well developed interpersonal skills with the ability to work cooperatively and interact in a team environment.

Eligibility and Training Requirements

Aboriginality is considered essential for this position under section 50D of the Equal Employment Opportunity Act.

Employees will be required to:

  • provide evidence of eligibility to work in Australia for the term of the vacancy
  • complete the Department’s induction program within three months of commencement
  • complete the Department’s training in Accountable and Ethical Decision-Making within six months of appointment and every three years thereafter.
  • complete the Department’s Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cultural awareness online course within 3 months of commencement
  • complete any training specific to this role required by Departmental policy
  • consent to a Nationally Coordinated Criminal History Check and obtain a current Screening Clearance Number issued by the Department of Education’s Screening Unit prior to commencement of employment
  • obtain or hold a current Working with Children Check

The Department applies a four (4) day breach period to this selection process.
