Role Overview

The People and Culture Branch have an exciting opportunity for an experienced professional to join the team in a permanent full-time capacity as the Coordinator Wellbeing and Safety.

The main focuses of this position will be to promote and improve effective systems and practices across Gympie Regional Council in WH&S and Wellbeing. This role will have carriage with the team for embedding a safety culture that positions council as a leader in WH&S and Wellbeing. Functional leadership is also required in areas such as safety, rehab, return of work, wellbeing, and a balancing lead and lag indicators.

The position will also provide proactive support and education to the organisation in all Workplace Health and Safety (WHS) matters, whilst ensuring provision of WHS services are aligned with the requirements and expectations of Council. This will be achieved by meeting the following responsibilities (however, not limited to):

  • Provide expert technical advice, guidance, coaching and support to all stakeholders in council on Work Health and Safety (WH&S) matters including practical interpretations and application of the WH&S Act, Regulations, Codes of Practice and other industry guidelines relevant to Council.
  • Manage rehabilitation function, and Workers Compensation portfolio of injured workers and related tasks ensuring compliance of Return to Work and Rehabilitation Legislation.
  • Manage and maintain Safe Work Procedures, Safety Management System, SWMS, Registers and working documents.
  • Monitor Council and Employee’s compliance with WH&S legislation, Council Policies and Procedures and refine WH&S performance indicators in consultation with key stakeholders.
  • Lead and mentor the WH&S / Wellbeing team through effective leadership skills, including conducting performance reviews and training needs analysis for direct reports.
  • Manage, plan and continuously improve WH&S related training / inductions for council in cooperation with the OD team.
  • Identify initiatives and make recommendations regarding safety performance improvements including contributing to job and workplace ergonomics to manage and reduce workplace injuries and illnesses.

What we are looking for

To be successful in this position, you should have:

  • Formal Qualification in WH&S (e.g. Degree/Diploma) or equivalent significant experience.
  • Significant experience in a similar role with a medium sized organisation.
  • Experience in effectively leading, managing and mentoring a team in a diverse work environment like local government.
  • Highly effective stakeholder management skills with internal and external customers, including interpersonal skills of negotiation, influence, presenting & facilitating effectively in groups and with individuals.
  • Highly developed skills to interpret and apply WHS legislation including Workers Compensation, Regulations, Codes of Practice, Policies etc. in the workplace.
  • Significant Project management experience in a WHS / Wellbeing context in a mid-sized organisation
  • Well-developed time management skills, including the ability to adapt to changing priorities and work across industry types eg construction, water, administration, planning, compliance, governance and others.

You should also have the following mandatory licences/competencies requirements:

  • Certificate IV in Occupational Health & Safety as a minimum
  • Formal training in incident investigation and / or a minimum of 5 years of experience
  • Formal and recognised Rehabilitation and Return to Work Coordinator training, with significant experience.
  • Queensland ‘C’ Class driver’s licence or above that is current and maintained.
  • Construction Industry White Card.
