About the role
We have an excellent opportunity for an experienced community professional to join the Aboriginal Legal Service of Western Australia (ALSWA) team as a Court Officer in the Bunbury office.
This position requires a person who is highly organised, self-motivated and demonstrated ability to provide high quality representation and assistance to our clients.
Court Officers play an important role in assisting ALSWA clients. The role requires the employee to appear as an advocate in the Magistrate’s and Children’s Courts in relation to criminal law matters, attend jails to assist and advise clients and to liaise closely with lawyers working in the criminal law area.
Regular travel to circuit courts at various locations in the region is a requirement.
Local knowledge and understanding of Aboriginal culture, society and the issues affecting Aboriginal people is required.
Other responsibilities include weekend court appearances (on a rostered basis).
About you
To be considered for this opportunity, you will need to meet the following criteria:
- Have sound local knowledge of the local Aboriginal community
- Sound literacy skills
- Well developed communication skills with the ability to communicate effectively with Aboriginal people
- Ability to appear in court as an advocate on behalf of Aboriginal people
- Ability to develop analytical and research skills
- Understand the importance of confidentiality and uphold it at all times
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team
- Organisational and time management skills and able to work under pressure
- Able to work outside of hours and travel when required
- Must hold or be eligible to hold a certificate pursuant to Section 48 of the Aboriginal Affairs Planning Authority Act 1972.
- Hold a current motor vehicle drivers license
- Provide a National Police Certificate
