CULTURAL SUPPORT OFFICER – Aboriginal Identified Position

Are you passionate about helping children and young people reach milestones in their lives?

Burrun Dalai provides a host of services including foster care to Aboriginal children & young people of the Macleay, Nambucca, Hastings, Manning, Armidale and Tamworth Regions.

We are now recruiting for a passionate and motivated Cultural Support Officer to join our multidisciplinary team and help provide Cultural Support to the team and our children, young people and families.

This opportunity would suit someone with a background of Child Protection or Out of Home Care, has a strong understanding of culture and a passion to help our communities. 

This is a full-time role in Taree, NSW.

What you are responsible for:

  • Provide location specific support to our Genealogist in relation to Cultural Support and Cultural Plan development for children and young people.
  • Participate as appropriate in Cultural Programs provided by Burrun Dalai for our children and young people, birth families and foster carers.
  • Assist with Executive Officer, Cultural Programs to development the strategies to ensure promotion of our children and young people’s cultural identities.

SELECTION CRITERIA:

ESSENTIAL:

  1. Aboriginality. 
  2. A demonstrated connection to culture and community.
  3. Experience in working with or in Aboriginal communities. 
  4. Demonstrated capacity to research using multimedia tools and community networks. 
  5. Excellent interpersonal and written communication skills and demonstrated high level assessment and report writing skills.
  6. Demonstrated skills with a range of software relevant to the position including proficiency with databases, word processing skills, spreadsheets, and PowerPoint.
  7. Demonstrated ability to work with minimal day-to-day supervision and a demonstrated capacity to work collaboratively within a team environment.
  8. Proven ability to liaise with relevant government and non-government professionals, community groups, services and agencies in the provision and development of services.
  9. Self-motivated with proven effective time management and organisational skills.
  10. Demonstrated knowledge of the principles of Workplace Health and Safety, Equal Opportunity, Ethical practices, and continuous quality improvement. 
  11. Possess and retain an NSW Drivers Licence. 

DESIRABLE:

  1. Current First Aid Certificate or willingness to obtain.
  2. Working knowledge of the Child and Young Persons Care and Protection Act (1988), with knowledge of out-of-homecare legislation(s) and practice and a proven willingness to keep up to date.
  3. Working knowledge of issues involving Out of Home Care for Aboriginal children and young people, families, and foster carers in the Office Location CSC Areas, and in particular the unique difficulties/issues that arise for Aboriginal children, young people, and foster carers.
  4. Understanding the role of the Office of Children’s Guardian and Out of Home Care Standards and Child Safe organisations.
