The Queensland Family and Child Commission (QFCC) is a statutory body that plays a critical role in both reviewing and improving the systems that protect and safeguard children. Established by the Family and Child Commission Act 2014, the act states that their responsibilities lie in three key areas: promoting the safety, well-being, and best interests of children and young people, advocating for the responsibility of families and communities to protect and care for children and young people, and finally to improve the child protection system.
Through influencing systemic change by driving accountability, raising awareness, amplifying voices, and advocating for change, the QFCC is a pivotal organisation in helping to improve outcomes for the most vulnerable. In joining QFCC, you will be joining a team that is committed to the ensuring Queensland’s children and young people are loved, respected, and have their rights upheld. As a rights-based organisation, they uphold the four core principals of the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child (UNCRC) which are:
- Non-discrimination
- Devotion to the best interests of the child
- The right to life, survival, and development
- Respect for the views of the child.
Reporting to the Commissioner, you will utilise your strong background and experience in leadership, strategy development and implementation, and people and project management skills to influence change on a system-wide basis. You will be expected to perform statutory functions with a clear focus on First Nations and young people. This will involve the development and delivery of a program of work to enable the Commissioner to raise awareness of systemic issues, advocate strongly for appropriate and effective solutions and drive systemic accountability to deliver successful outcomes.
You will also monitor and strategically respond to systemic trends in the child protection systems with a sustained and constant focus on representing the interests of Aboriginal and Torres Strait children, families, and communities. This role will require you to build, maintain, and improve effective partnerships with both government and non-government stakeholders, including the driving of agency-wide collaboration on strategic projects that enable the Commission to operate with influence and effectiveness.
About the person
This critical role will see you lead in a strategic manner where you will be able to demonstrate the ability to provide high-quality strategic advice on key matters including the ability to effectively work with relevant Ministers and organisational leaders. You should have a background that demonstrates senior-level communication skills and the ability to use your communication skills to influence up, down, and at peer level. You will have experience in engaging and partnering with First Nations people, organisations, and communities where you will have been responsible for analysis, review, engagement, and communication including the analysis and reporting on government policy. Equally critical is that you have been able to demonstrate sound governance in a highly transparent environment, ideally being formally aware of the right to self-determination and awareness of the principles of “reframing the relationship”.
