Sustainable Salons is a social enterprise with a mission to empower businesses (primarily within the hair and beauty industry) and conscious consumers to live their values and make sustainability reality.
They support a community of member salons by offering innovative, technology-enabled solutions aimed at rescuing up to 95% of salon resources from landfill and donating the proceeds from the sale of materials to local communities and charities.
About The Role
Reporting to the Chief Operating Officer, the Financial Controller will have the autonomy to oversee and develop the newly formed Finance team and help to improve Sustainable Salons’ financial operations and processes. This will include responsibility for building the team to perform the financial accounts, budgets, accounts payable and receivable, payroll, taxation, and reporting functions for the business.
Key Responsibilities
Financial Controls and Processes:
- Supervise a small team to deliver effective and timely Accounts Payable, Accounts Receivable, Tax, Treasury, Payroll, Financial, and Management Accounting services.
- Maintain robust internal controls and continuously improve the efficiency and effectiveness of financial processes.
- Provide guidance on financial policies and procedures.
Financial Planning, Analysis and Management:
- Manage budgeting and forecasting
- Develop and implement financial models to support strategic planning and decision-making
- Conduct regular financial analysis, identify trends, and provide insights to Executive Leadership
- Proactively support managers to control their budgets throughout the year aligned with business goals
- Provide financial insights to support decision-making and contribute to long-term financial planning
Cash Flow and Risk Management:
- Manage cash flow and liquidity to meet operational needs.
- Implement effective working capital management strategies.
- Monitor and analyse financial risks and propose mitigation strategies.
Reporting and Compliance:
- Prepare accurate and timely financial statements, reports, and forecasts.
- Ensure compliance with relevant accounting standards, regulations, and tax requirements in Australia and NZ.
- Coordinate with external accountants for tax compliance.
Financial Systems and Tools Implementation:
- Lead the implementation and integration of new financial systems and tools.
- Conduct software evaluation and selection to align with company needs.
- Collaborate with IT and accounting teams to ensure seamless integration.
- Train staff on new systems and processes.
- Maintain internal controls to uphold financial integrity.
Skills and Experience:
- CA or CPA qualification with a bachelor's degree in accounting, finance, or related field.
- Proven experience (1-2 years) in a Financial Controller role (or working at a similar level), either at a whole-of-business or business unit level of a similar size ($10 million—$50 million)
- Excellent knowledge of financial regulations and accounting principles and standards (within both Australia and NZ preferred).
- Proficient in financial modelling and analysis and an understanding of payroll principles.
- Proven capacity to effectively supervise and manage a small team.
- Integrity and a commitment to ethical financial practice.
- Proficiency in financial software systems, and technology. Advanced Excel skills, and experience with Xero. EXO is desirable but not essential.
- Great Communication Skills - With the ability to make complexity easily understood and memorable.
Work Environment
- This is a Remote-First position which means that you can work from anywhere in the Greater Sydney Region. Some in person collaboration will occur at an office in central Sydney (approximately once per month).
- There may be occasional travel for team events and conferences
