Are you interested in supporting the implementation of the Whole of School Healthy Eating Program for all schools in WA?

The FreshSNAP team are looking for their next Project Officer. If you have a public health nutrition, nutrition and dietetics qualification and some knowledge and understanding of the WA public health nutrition landscape, we’d love to hear from you. You’ll be working in a collaborative team, supporting the implementation of the Whole of School Healthy Eating Program (FreshSNAP), a state-wide advisory and implementation support service for all schools across Western Australia. The role is part time (0.8 FTE) and is confirmed until 30 June 2027 with the possibility of extension.

FreshSNAP is an all- in- one- place service where the whole school community - leadership, teachers, canteen and food service staff, students and families including professionals supporting schools can access tools and resources that will build their capacity to create and sustain healthy school food and drink environments. This initiative is funded by the Western Australian Government, Department of Health.

How you’ll contribute:

In this position, you’ll work both collaboratively and autonomously to:

• Provide information and advice to WA schools to ensure that healthy eating is integrated into the school curriculum, school policies, and the school food environment.

• Deliver training to school communities (encompassing leadership, teachers, canteen and food service staff, students and families).

• Collect and develop case studies demonstrating healthy changes to food and drink provision in schools.

• Maintaining a telephone and email advisory service to support WA schools in implementing policies and guidelines.

• Coordinate and supervise volunteers, students and consultant dietitians/nutritionists as required.

• Maintaining an awareness of current issues impacting the health of people from Western Australia and nationally.

• Contribute to the development of internal processes to support the implementation of FreshSNAP.

• Identify operational efficiencies to ensure service delivery excellence.

• Contribute to the implementation of the engagement strategy in conjunction with the FreshSNAP team to engage new organisations and stakeholders to increase uptake of FreshSNAP by schools across Western Australia.

• Collaborate with partner programs on joint initiatives.

• Contribute to the program reports for the Department of Health including annual reports.

Key selection criteria

Qualifications/Experience:

Essential:

• Tertiary qualifications in at least one of the following: public health nutrition, nutrition or dietetics.

• Knowledge and understanding of the Western Australian public health nutrition landscape.

• Excellent written and verbal communication and interpersonal skills.

• Experience in developing and maintaining relationships with a diverse range of stakeholders.

• Experience and confidence in presenting to various audiences.

• Excellent organisational and task management skills, including demonstrated ability to set goals and targets, meet tight deadlines and handle competing demands.

• Ability to work independently or as part of a team.

• Demonstrated attention to detail and critical analysis skills.

• Demonstrated experience in resource development.

• An understanding of program planning, specifically in relation to public health nutrition programs.

• Willingness to learn.

• Knowledge and understanding of evidence-based health promotion strategies and how these contribute to developing healthier communities.

Desirable:

• Excellent understanding of the policies, guidelines and frameworks that direct the operation of Western Australian schools, specifically with regard to nutrition and healthy eating.

• Experience in advising the provision of healthy food and drinks for schools.

• A good understanding of evidence-based research and ability to translate high level research as well as relevant guidelines and policies into resources that are usable by the general public.

• Current driver’s license and own vehicle.
