About Us:

The Barwon South West Region (BSWR) provides justice services from Justice Service Centres in Geelong and Warrnambool, and through reporting centres in Colac, Hamilton, and Portland. The region has a prison precinct that currently includes three prisons, the maximum-security HM Prison Barwon and medium security Prisons - Marngoneet Correctional Centre and Karreenga.

In addition to the custodial services provided at our prisons, Regional Justice Service Centres provide Community Correctional Services, Sheriff's Operations, Offender Behaviour Programs, Consumer Affairs, Births Deaths and Marriages, Dispute Settlement Centre, and Regional Aboriginal Justice Advisory Committee.

About the Role:

The Justice Officer - Finance provides a range of financial and purchasing transactional services to the Barwon South West Prisons - HMP Barwon, Marngoneet and Karreenga Correctional Centres. The Justice Officer is an entry-level position to a career in corporate services within the Department of Justice and Community Safety (DJCS).

This position will require direct prisoner contact and may involve occasional weekend and public holiday work, remunerated in accordance with the applicable provision of the VPS Determination. The successful applicant will be required to work across the Barwon South West Region Prison Precinct (various prisons) as deemed necessary.

Some of your duties will include:

  • As part of the Finance Team and under supervision, providing high quality financial and purchasing services, in accordance with the Financial Management Act 1994, other government regulations, guidelines and local operating procedures.
  • Undertaking purchasing functions, maintain accurate and up to date records ensuring adherence with relevant legislative and organisational requirements. Assist with the ordering and processing of prisoner financial transactions.
  • Performing accounts functions, including payables, receivables, reconciliation, data entry, reporting, as well as overseeing the administration of prisoner private monies.
  • Liaising with internal and external staff and stakeholders regarding prison and prisoner finance matters.
  • Providing support and assistance in a range of other corporate services functions for program areas within the Barwon South West Region.

About You:

As our ideal candidate, you will be able to demonstrate:

  • Computer skills (MS Office skills i.e. MS Word, Excel, Outlook, Teams) with demonstrated knowledge and experience of working with relevant software.
  • Knowledge of financial systems, process and experience in a finance environment.
  • Problem solving abilities, with the capacity to priorities tasks effectively.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills with demonstrated experience of working collaboratively.
