Detention Operations is responsible for the operational management of Australia's onshore Immigration Detention network, comprising of Immigration Detention facilities and alternative places of detention across mainland Australia and Christmas Island.
Detention Operations works closely with contracted detention service providers and other stakeholders to ensure the health, welfare, safety and security of detainees, the safety and security of facilities, and the safety of all contractors, visitors, and staff. Detention Operations also works closely with other areas of the ABF and the Department to manage all detention related queries and requests.

Duties and responsibilities
Logistics and Security Intelligence
Logistics and Security Intelligence teams focus on operational logistics, security and welfare of detainees. This may include:
- Transfer operations,
- Incident management
- Detainee engagement
- Progressing detainee requests
- Security and intelligence liaison and resolution of complaints.
Contract Management and Administration
Contract Management and Administration teams have responsibility for coordinating and undertaking detailed analytical tasks, and may include:
- Record keeping on service provider contractual performance, and
- Providing corporate support to the ABF at Yongah Hill IDC.
Officers performing these roles will need to possess a high degree of flexibility, good judgment and responsiveness to operational needs. A high level of resilience is required to work in a fast paced environment where you may be required to respond to rapidly evolving situations. Effective management of relationships with contracted service providers, internal and external stakeholders and scrutiny bodies are critical components of the work in detention facilities.

If successful for one of the ABF advertised positions, you may be required to:
- Be operationally ready (by meeting and sustaining the medical and fitness requirements necessary for a role, including resilience)
- Swear an oath or make an affirmation
- Be uniformed
- Maintain essential and role-specific qualifications such as technical qualifications
- Actively participate in career management (ABF postings and deployments)
- Undergo a health assessment (where applicable)
- Candidates should also be aware that roles in Detention Operations currently require vaccination against COVID-19.

Eligibility
To be eligible for the position you must be an Australian Citizen.
The successful candidate will be required to obtain and maintain a Baseline Vetting (AGSVA) security clearance and an Employment Suitability Clearance (ESC).
