ABOUT THE TEAM
Legal & Assurance Branch (LAB) partners with business areas in the Department of Finance to provide high quality legal, governance and assurance services. LAB comprises four core teams:
- Administrative & Public Law responsible for providing strategic legal advice on statutory interpretation, administrative and employment law matters and FOI.
- Information Law responsible for providing strategic legal advice on information requests (including responding to third-party information requests and Royal Commissions), coordinating the privacy function and legislation program for Finance.
- Commercial Law responsible for providing strategic commercial and corporate legal advice, drafting negotiating, dispute resolution across a wide range of activities of the department, including procurement, contracts (and memoranda of understanding), real property, intellectual property, and management of some commercial litigation.
- Assurance & Risk responsible for financial governance, enterprise risk management, internal and external audit liaison, fraud control and insurance liaison. The team also supports the Risk Sub‑committee of Executive Board and the independent Audit Committee.
ABOUT THE OPPORTUNITY
The Branch is seeking high performing APS 5, APS 6 and EL 1 Legal Officers/ Senior Legal Officers to fill vacancies in the Administrative & Public Law, Information Law and Commercial Law teams in Legal Officer roles. Core duties will include:
- promoting and managing relationships with internal and external stakeholders including senior executives
- working collaboratively within the team, other enabling functions in Finance, internal clients, and stakeholders.
For the Administrative & Public Law and Information Law teams, we are seeking:
- lawyers with skills and experience relevant to administrative law, including privacy and FOI, who can draft practical and technically sound legal advice, reflecting a proper understanding of Finance’s operations and strategic environment.
For the Commercial Law team, we are seeking:
- experienced commercial lawyers who are able to provide legal advice and drafting that is practical and technically sound, reflecting a clear understanding of Finance’s operations and strategic environment.
In addition, core duties at the EL 1 level may include:
- managing staff to deliver aspects of complex advising matters
- contributing to the leadership of the team and stewardship of a positive and supportive culture.

ELIGIBILITY ADVICE & CANDIDATE NOTES

All Finance staff are required to have a minimum baseline security clearance prior to commencement.
- These roles are being advertised as both ongoing and non-ongoing. A position may be offered as ongoing or non-ongoing subject to operational requirements and/or candidate preference. Where a non‑ongoing position is offered, the role will be filled for a specified term of up to 12 months. A specified term may be extended up to a maximum period of 18 months.
