The Kanku-Breakaways Conservation Park Co-management Board manage the Kanku-Breakaways Conservation Park and the Great Kanku-Breakaways Bolt, an annual running, walking or bike riding event.
The Park is Aboriginal owned and under co-management in a unique three way agreement between Antakirinja Matu-Yankunytjatjara Aboriginal Corporation (AMYAC), District Council of Coober Pedy (DCCP) and Department for Environment and Water.
The park protects a diverse range of landscapes and flora and fauna. It has magnificent scenery and an international reputation through the many feature films shot in the park. The Great Kanku-Breakaways Bolt is a way for community and visitors to enjoy the park and take advantage of the unique landscape up close.
About the role
Objectives and Key Responsibilities of the Position
The Marathon Event Coordinator will oversee the activities associated with hosting of the Great Kanku-Breakaways Bolt, Marathon, fun run and ride, by the Kanku-Breakaways Conservation Park Co-management Board.
Liaise with Local and District sporting and community associations to increase participation and promotion of the marathon.
Investigate opportunities for sponsorship funding.
The Marathon Event Coordinator will maintain a close liaison with the Kanku - Breakaways Staff, Antakirinja Matu-Yankunytjatjara Aboriginal Corporation (AMYAC) and the wider community.
The Marathon Event Coordinator may from time to time be asked to assist with other events in the Kanku-Breakaways Conservation Park as the need arises.
Key Outcomes:
The coordination and hosting of successful Great Kanku-Breakaways Marathon, fun run and ride, event characterised by competitor, volunteer and spectator safety and satisfaction.
Provision of detailed project planning for the Great Kanku-Breakaways Marathon and finalisation of marathon after the event
Clear communication through web, print, radio, and TV (as required) to the wider community.
Contribute to and promote the protection, enhancement, and maintenance of the cultural aspects of the Kanku – Breakaways Conservation Park.
Constructive and cooperative working relationships are fostered and actively maintained with key stakeholders to raise awareness of and engagement in the marathon and Kanku-Breakaways Conservation Park.
Work with the team to deliver the marathon and other events if required.
Engage with AMYAC, Coober Pedy community and wider audience to encourage volunteers for the event.

Flexible working arrangements available. Work pattern will likely include a small amount of work each week in the lead up to the event then near full time hours close to the event.
The role will have the support of all Kanku-Breakaways staff during the actual event as well as handover and ongoing support from the team.
Key Selection Criteria
- Experience in coordinating and facilitating sporting and social events.
- Experience/qualifications in tourism information or a related field.
- Communication skills must be characterised by patience, clarity, empathy and understanding and the ability to communicate efficiently and effectively with other staff.
- Experience in writing funding applications and sourcing sponsorship monies.
- Be prepared to work weekends and after hours as per Enterprise Bargaining Agreement.
- Time management, planning and organisational skills essential in order to meet deadlines.
- Excellent data entry skills.
- Work independently and without close supervision.
- Ability to maintain confidentiality at all times.
- Above average written skills (e.g., letter and report compilation).
- Experience in working within an office environment and the use of relevant office equipment
- Current ‘C’ driver’s licence.
