The Role
The Mechanical Engineer is responsible for Design and integration of ship systems and components. Responsibilities encompass generating and updating their own Engineering drawings and bills of materials and working with the wider Mechanical team on shop floor details for use in the shipyard. The role includes liaison and collaboration with interrelated engineering disciplines, departments, and stakeholders of the wider shipyard.
This role has a piping focus, so preference shall be given to those with experience and expertise in piping design, shipbuilding, and multidisciplinary and manufacturing environments.
The ideal candidate will be a motivated team player, enthusiastic about fostering a cohesive team environment within Mechanical and Engineering and dedicated to promoting this culture company-wide.
Responsibilities
- Engineering, design and integration of mechanical systems, piping, valves, fittings, routing and penetrations
- 2D drafting and drawing updates, primarily NX PID software, and 2D BricsCAD
- Occasional 3D modelling in Siemens NX, working with specialists in this field for routing and routing updates.
- 3D visualisation in Siemens TC Vis within the Engineering team, and to help communicate engineering intent.
- Use of inhouse and Siemens PLM systems to manage piping Bom and lifecycles.
- Mechanical engineering of and assistance with the in-house design of mechanical, outfitting, or interior components
- Shop floor drawings, overview drawings, detail catalogues, bills of material and equipment, including maintenance considerations with other departments.
- Proactively gather information and process and distribute throughout the shipyard.
- Process and respond to technical queries and non-conformance tickets, including liaison with Production, Manufacturing and Sub-Contractors via the Project Engineers.
- Collaboration with other departments and design disciplines
- Occasional collaboration with German colleagues of N.V.L where specialist guidance or training may be required.
- Liaison with Production to adjust to production-oriented solutions to solve issues and to gather feedback for future improvements.
- Independent acquisition and organisation of information; distribution of information to relevant parties; coordination of interfaces with respect to design and construction.
- Clarification with relevant parties in relation to construction sequence
- Comparison of 3D model and shop floor drawings
- Creation of design documentation and manufacturing data
- Check manufacturing data for compliance to applicable design and manufacturing standards.
- Assisting in the preparation and provision of manufacturing data to subcontractors
- Ship specific system responsibility dependent on design discipline.
- Creation and checking of engineering drawings.
- Preparation of inquiry and order specifications
- Creation of test specifications for Factory Acceptance Tests (FATs).
- Participation in and execution of FATs where technical assistance is requested by Quality.
- Manage design drawings, engineering changes and notices relating to Mechanical.
- Coordination of the relevant building specification
- Conducting regular internal departmental design reviews
- Continuous further development of ship system knowledge and product knowledge
- Creation and maintenance of checklists for standard processes for relevant ship systems to mechanical activities
- Informing stakeholders of relevant design changes
Requirements
- Completed studies in the field of Mechanical engineering or a comparable qualification.
- Ideally Degree qualified with no less than 5 years' relevant work experience.
- Industry-relevant experience and other qualifications shall be taken into consideration.
- Experience in a multidisciplinary engineering environment, preferably in piping engineering, design and manufacture.
- Shipbuilding experience highly regarded.
- Defence experience highly regarded.
- Production and trade experience highly regarded.
- Competent knowledge in MS Office (Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint) is essential.
- PLM and/or database experience highly regarded.
- Competent knowledge in AutoCAD (BricsCAD) required.
- Exposure or experience in parametric 3D modelling highly regarded.
