About the Opportunity
An opportunity is available for a Mechanical Designer to support design and drafting activities to ASC and the Royal Australian Navy in support of the Collins Class Submarine (CCSM) Life of Type Extension (LOTE) Program. The role will see the successful applicant producing 3D models and 2D mechanical drawings for the integration of a number of LOTE impacted submarine systems.
Responsibilities
- Perform technically challenging mechanical design and drafting tasks which demonstrate knowledge of engineering fundamentals;
- Undertake detail design activities utilising 3D model information to produce 2D engineering drawings, from components through to installation drawings
- Creation of parts lists and weight impact sheets for all designs
- Produce outputs consistent with established industry standards (i.e. AS 1100 and DEF(AUST) 5085)
- Use of PLM system to maintain configuration control of design artefacts
- Providing mentoring for junior designers with a focus on checking peers work
- Provide estimates of hours required to create/update design artefacts to fulfil project requirements
- Consult with key project stakeholders to deliver regular updates on work status
- Provide cross discipline support to assist with delivery of engineering products and services
- Analysis of detail design processes to identify opportunities for innovation and improvement
About you
- Advanced Diploma / Associate Degree of Engineering in relevant field or equivalent experience.
- Minimum 5+ years’ experience in mechanical design and integration of complex systems including production of manufacturing level drawings.
- Proven ability in the use of AutoCAD and Autodesk Inventor 3D
- Knowledge of PLM systems and the role of configuration management in the design process
- Understanding of engineering documentation and drawings including adherence to standards
- Adaptability to work on multiple design activities concurrently whilst still delivering work on time and budget.
- Sound written and oral communication skills
- High standard of personal organisation and attention to detail
- Ability to build and maintain interpersonal and professional relationships with stakeholders, as well as the drive to motivate yourself and others, and embrace personal development.
- Capability to manage design activities to deliver work on time and budget
Desirable competencies and experiences
- Familiarity with PLM (Product Lifecycle Management) tools and procedures
- Knowledge and understanding of Defence Seaworthiness Management System (DSWMS) and its application to Engineering Delegations and Risk Levels.
- Knowledge of Submarines or the Shipbuilding engineering environment.
Eligibility
This role requires a current National Police Clearance, an Australian Defence Security Clearance and an ability to access protected US defence technology. Your eligibility for this role is dependent on you obtaining and maintaining such clearances and approvals.
