ABOUT THE OPPORTUNITYThe Strategic Communications team sit within Council’s Corporate Performance Directorate and is responsible for providing high quality Media and Communications services to all stakeholders including our community, Executive Team, Senior Leadership Team and Council staff.
The team provides timely advice and assistance to internal and external customers on a range of communications functions including content creation and design, Media and public relations management, digital and social media management, marketing, advertising, promotions, print and brand management.
The Media and Communications Advisor works closely with stakeholders across all levels of the organisation to develop, implement and measure the success of communications plans.
Reporting to the Coordinator Communications Services, this position is responsible for the coordination and delivery of Council's internal and external communications activities and programs, including media relations and social media.
The successful applicant will require:
- Tertiary qualifications in communications, journalism, public relations or a related field.
- Demonstrated knowledge and experience in the area of corporate communications and strategic public relations
- Advanced level of written and verbal communication skills, including ability to communicate with a range of stakeholders
- Demonstrated ability to develop, implement and measure the success of detailed communication plans
- Demonstrated ability to prepare communications materials for a range of media, including media releases, speeches and newsletters, website copy and social media content
- Demonstrated ability to identify media risk or opportunity, manage media enquiries and develop media statements
- Highly developed organisational and time management skills, demonstrated ability to organise work, manage time, determine priorities and meet deadlines.
- Demonstrated ability to produce high quality work within strict deadlines with minimal supervision, as well as working on multiple projects as part of a small multi-skilled team.
- Demonstrated experience to solve problems using research, analysis, and evaluation of information which may not be readily available
- Demonstrated ability to make judgements or recommendations based on advanced analytical or creative thought
- Valid Working with Children Check (or ability to obtain)

About this role: This is a permanent full-time position, working a 70 hour fortnight/week, with access to Council's 9 day fortnight Accrued Day Off (ADO) arrangement.

- Located at Council's Merrylands office, with occasional travel required across Council worksites, and may be required to work across any of Council’s work locations
- Due to the nature of the role, the successful candidate may be required to work some evenings, weekend and public holidays as required, in agreement with the Manager. These engagements will be paid at overtime rates in addition to the remuneration outlined below, and in accordance with the Local Government (State) Award 2023.
Salary information: The salary and conditions of employment are in accordance with the NSW Local Government (State) Award.
- Grade 11 of the Cumberland Salary Structure with a salary range of $1,656.10 to $1,904.51 per week, plus 11% superannuation
- The commencing salary will be negotiated, taking into consideration the successful applicant's qualifications, skills and experience related to the role
