The Opportunity

An opportunity awaits an experienced risk management professional with a specialised focus on Technical and Safety expertise. Your role will be pivotal in identifying, assessing, and mitigating potential risks associated with technical regulations and on-track activities for motorsport in Australia. Your role will extend to overseeing and collaborating with volunteer officials, playing a crucial part in their training, coordination, and effective integration into the broader safety framework. This challenging yet rewarding position will require you to navigate the delicate balance between pushing technical boundaries and maintaining airtight safety measures.

About the Role

The Motorsport Technical and Safety Director is an Executive level position and has overall responsibility for how we go racing. It oversees Motorsport Australia’s Technical and Safety operations and is responsible for the competition side of motorsport.  The planning and structure for how we go racing is as important as the racing itself. These technical, regulatory and Safety aspects of the sport are now so critical that a standalone Director role has been created. 

Key responsibilities include:

Motorsport Safety & Risk 

  • Our sport is not without risks, and this role is responsible to proactively identifying and minimising these risks. Along with the Motorsport Risk and Safety Committee, this role will shape the risk environment for all levels of motorsport and has carriage of its key initiatives.

Technical Operations and Regulations

  • Racing is only as successful as the format and the rules for which we go racing. This role will oversee all technical safety regulations, processes and strategies in compliance with FIA, Motorsport Australia and civil requirements.

Track Safety

  • As the sole governing body of all four wheeled motorsport in Australia, delegated this authority through the FIA and the Australia Government, this role is responsible for ensuring that Motorsport Australia continues to adhere to FIA track safety requirements and worlds best practice safety standards.

Officials 

  • Motorsport Australia has 10,000 licensed volunteer officials who without, motorsport would not be able to run. The strategy for the management, training, recruitment and retention of this workforce sits within the remit of this role and will drive initiatives to enable Motorsport Australia to be one of the world’s best and most-recognised Officiating Programs.

Judicial

  • Motorsport Australia has a robust and independent judicial structure to provide fairness to all its members. This role is to provide administrative support to Motorsport Australia's judicial structure and, where necessary, to act as the Secretary of the Court to any judicial proceedings. 

About You

To be successful in this role you will have:

  • A strong background in technical, risk and/or safety with experience leading teams and managing operations in a variety of functional areas.
  • Strong communication skills, with the ability to build relationships with key stakeholders and volunteers.
  • Strong strategic thinking skills, with the ability to identify opportunities and threats and develop a long-term plan for Motorsport Technical and Safety.
  • Experience in establishing and promoting a culture of safety, ensuring compliance with relevant regulations, and implementing proactive measures to protect the well-being of employees, volunteers, members and other stakeholders.
  • Prepared to travel interstate, including frequent attendance at events (club, state and national) across the motorsport calendar incorporating weekends.
  • Experience working with or for a not for profit with a strong volunteer component highly desirable.
  • A good understanding of the motorsport industry desirable. 
  • Bachelor’s degree in risk, safety or business administration or equivalent desirable.
