Container Exchange (QLD) Limited (COEX) is seeking an experienced Non-Executive Director (legal background) to join the Board. The Board seeks to complement the existing Board by appointing a Director who can represent the interests of the community and beverage manufacturing industry. Suitable candidates will bring environmental, recycling, circular economy, with legal qualifications and experience to the Board.
About COEX:
COEX is the product responsibility organisation appointed by the Queensland Government to oversee the container deposit scheme in Queensland known as Containers for Change. The scheme was introduced on 1 November 2018 and focuses on increasing recycling outcomes, reducing beverage container litter and delivering positive social impact to Queenslanders by exchanging eligible drink containers for a 10 cent refund.
The scheme operates under the legislative framework of the Waste Reduction and Recycling Act 2011 (Qld) and is funded by the beverage manufacturing industry through a product stewardship model. COEX reports to the Minister for Environment and the Great Barrier Reef and Minister for Science and Youth Affairs on its strategic plan, operations and achievements.
About The COEX Board:
The COEX Board is comprised of Nine Non-Executive Directors with a mix of independent and member representatives from beverage manufacturing, finance, legal and community sectors. The Board and Board Committees meet regularly either in person or via video, and each Non-Executive Director will be a member of one of the Board Committees. The time expectation for the role is 10 hours a month.
Essential Attributes
- We are seeking individuals who:
- represent the interests of the Queensland community; and/or
- represent the beverage manufacturing industry (either as an association and/or as large and small producer); and/or
- have legal qualifications and experience; and/or
- have environmental, recycling and/or circular economy experience.
- Relevant industry experience across:
- container deposit schemes; and/or
- resource recovery and recycling; and/or
- circular economy; and/or
- environmental management; and/or
- behaviour science; and/or
- not-for-profit operations
- Legal expertise: Extensive background in law, with a focus on regulatory compliance, contract negotiation, and governance matters, particularly within the context of environmental legislation and product stewardship frameworks.
- Ability to work collaboratively with other Directors while maintaining independent thought and preparedness to challenge others’ thinking;
- Prior Board or Committee experience;
- Formal Governance qualifications (e.g. GAICD, GIA or equivalent) or a willingness to undertake governance training;
- Queensland based; and
- Non-Executive Director competencies including:
- High level of integrity and ethical standards;
- Effective communication and emotional intelligence;
- A strategic mindset with strong business acumen, commercial astuteness and financial literacy;
- In-depth knowledge and understanding of directors’ duties and good corporate governance principles; and
- Engaged commitment and effective time management.
