SESLHD Drug and Alcohol Service offers a range of treatment and support services for people with problems from their alcohol, prescription or illicit drug use, and/or their families and carers.
The D &A Nurse Practitioner (NP) provides readily available access to high level clinical expertise and support a nd will be predominantly based within outpatient D&A services located in clinics at the Langton Centre in Surry Hills, St George Drug & Alcohol Service in Kogarah, and Caringbah Community Health Centre at Sutherland Hospital. There will also be opportunities to work within inpatient D&A services are provided at Sydney Hospital, Prince of Wales, St. George and Sutherland Hospitals as required. Our goal is to improve health, wellbeing and social outcomes for individuals, families and the community, related to drug and alcohol use.
The Nurse Practitioner's extended practice role includes, comprehensive assessment, interpretation of diagnostics, implementation of treatment modalities and relevant referral skills applied to a broad range of challenging, complex and changing situations within the Drug & Alcohol settings. The Drug and Alcohol Nurse Practitioner (NP) provides person-centred care at an advanced nursing practice level incorporating diagnostic and treatment interventions using a high-level knowledge, skills and autonomy to achieve people focused quality care. The NP provides clinical nursing leadership, ensuring advanced assessment, person centred care planning and investigation including physical assessments, diagnostic reasoning and referrals, together with therapeutic interventions, including psychopharmacological interventions, for people with substance use disorders within the NP scope of practice.
The position will be for D&A Service across SESLHD. It will be based at Sutherland Drug & Alcohol Service but may also work at other Drug and Alcohol Service sites when required.
The NP will manage care across a variety of health systems to maximise outcomes - engaging in complex and critical thinking; integrating information and/or evidence; judiciously use clinical investigations; skilfully and empathetically communicating with all involved in the care episode, including the person receiving care, their carers, the community, and health professional colleagues.
The NP will engage in practice as guided by the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia Nurse Practitioner Standards Framework.
Employment of a temporary visa holder may only occur if no suitable permanent resident or citizen of Australia has been identified for this position following suitable labour market testing.
All workers and new recruits are required to receive 2 doses of a Therapeutic Goods Administration approved or recognised COVID-19 vaccine to commence employment/ engagement or continue to work within a NSW Health service.
A worker and new recruit will be considered compliant if they have a medical contraindication to all available Therapeutic Goods Administration approved or recognised COVID-19 vaccines and provide medical contraindication evidence in line with the policy requirements.
In addition, all Category A workers and new recruits are required to receive one dose of the seasonal influenza vaccine annually to be considered compliant.
Category A workers and new recruits who are non-compliant with seasonal influenza vaccination or have a medical contraindication to influenza or COVID-19 vaccinations must comply with all other infection control risk reduction strategies as directed while working in a Category A position.

  • Registered Nurse with the Nursing & Midwifery Board of Australia including endorsement as a Nurse Practitioner or working towards same as per the NMBA Guidelines on endorsement as a Nurse Practitioner within 6 months.
  • Post graduate qualifications at Masters level, in a NMBA approved program of study or relevant clinical specialty, or working towards.
  • Demonstrated high level knowledge and advanced clinical skills, competence and leadership in assessment, treatment and management of patients with substance use disorders, extensive clinical experience in opioid treatment, including physical, mental health, social and cultural dimensions.
  • Proven high level knowledge and expertise in complex client centred consultancy, practice development activities including mentoring, education, active participation in communities of practice, policy development and quality improvement.
  • Excellent leadership, negotiation, liaison, interpersonal problem-solving skills with proven ability to use appropriate teaching/learning strategies to educate and support others within the speciality of Drug & Alcohol services.
  • High level knowledge and understanding of current and trending issues impacting on the provision of drug and alcohol care in NSW including the provision of outpatient opioid agonist treatment for opioid dependence and the ability to lead and implement changes by the initiation, utilisation and review of evidence-based research.
  • Demonstrated ability to work with a high degree of autonomy and accountability while also working collaboratively in a multidisciplinary and multi service environment.
  • Capacity to work across LHD sites if required.
