About the Role
Working as an OT in QLD state schools is a rewarding career choice that can make a real difference in the lives of children and young people. You will work with students in their classrooms and other school environments, collaborate with school staff to utillise supports embedded in everyday classroom routines and deliver services in multi tier systems of support to realise the potential of our students.
This position is currently based in Roma however the location can be negotiated in the circuit of schools including St George, Miles, Roma, Charleville and Cunnamulla. South West QLD offers warm country town hospitality, a gateway to exploring outback Queensland and professional colleagues committed to delivering high quality services in the unique context of rural and remote Australia. This position contains regular overnight and multi-night travel to deliver services to the allocated schools, supported by funded accommodation, travel allowance (including generous meal allowances) and fleet vehicle use. Travel frequently occurs with other staff members.
Responsibilities include:
- Support students to achieve their potential using evidence-based contemporary occupational therapy knowledge and frameworks to assist schools to identify and make reasonable adjustments and use inclusive teaching strategies.
- Collaborate and liaise with school leaders, teachers, other service providers, and the supervising Occupational Therapist to assess barriers to student learning and develop and implement occupational therapy services across schools.
- Participate as an active member in education teams within schools to ensure the delivery of high quality, evidence-based contemporary occupational therapy services to enhance learning outcomes for students with disability.
- Use professional knowledge and skills to deliver occupational therapy services in accordance with departmental policies, procedures, professional standards and guidelines.
- Monitor and assess occupational therapy services provided across schools, in consultation with the supervising Occupational Therapist, to ensure that they improve student access and participation in education.
- Develop and implement best-practice assessment, program planning, intervention and monitoring strategies for students with disability, in accordance with legislation, departmental policies, procedures and guidelines.
- Provide consultative occupational therapy services and resources to assist school leaders and staff, parents, and other professional peers to develop knowledge and skills to support students with disability.
- Participate as a member of the school team, in the planning and management of at risk behaviours of students with the aim of preventing the use of restrictive practices, and where permitted, the prescription of mechanical restraint in accordance with the department's Restrictive Practices procedure.
- Participate in service planning at a whole-school level and regional and state level.
- Participate in the development, implementation, evaluation and monitoring of governance processes.
- Participate in quality improvement and research activities enhancing occupational therapy services in schools.
- Actively participate in professional development activities and clinical supervision to improve and ensure high quality services are delivered based on contemporary best practice.
