This is a permanent full-time position commencing Term 3, 2024

John Curtin College of the Arts is seeking an energetic, innovative, and inspiring educational leader to take up the position of Program Coordinator- Student Services (Director of College Engagement – Years 7-9). This represents an exciting opportunity for a school leader who possesses the vision, professional knowledge, and skills to effectively lead the Year 7-9 – College Engagement Team.

John Curtin College of the Arts is a leader in public education. Our commitment is to not only build capacity in students’ academic pursuits but to make each child the very best person they can be by celebrating achievements in all facets of education, using creativity to promote excellence and nurture wellbeing.

Our college is located on Wadjuk Boodjar in Walyalup (Fremantle) and caters for 1750 students from Years 7 to 12 who come to us through the seven Gifted and Talented programs run by the college for children identified as gifted in the creative domain, including; Ballet, Contemporary Dance, Drama, Media Arts, Music, Music Theatre and Visual Arts, as well as through a small local catchment or participation in our Soccer Excellence Program, making the college a unique learning environment. For our enrolled students the college also goes through an additional identification process for learners gifted in the intellectual domain, and runs a dedicated program for these students in English, Humanities, Maths and Science.

Engagement in creativity and the Arts is as a vehicle for student engagement and motivation at the college. The Arts at John Curtin is as much about providing dynamic opportunities for all students (each year we produce over 100 performances/exhibitions) as it is about developing transferable life skills such as empathy, creative and critical thinking, collaboration and the ability to communicate, all important attributes for any future pathway. Staff at the college enjoy the opportunity to attend performances throughout the year.

John Curtin is proud to be a Quality Teaching Strategy Lead School and works to implement evidence-based best practice teaching in line with Teaching for Impact. This provides opportunities for our staff to engage in professional development as well as providing opportunities to work with staff from other Department of Education schools to support quality teaching more broadly across the state.

As the Director of College Engagement (Years 7 – 9), you would lead a team of teaching and non-teaching staff in collaboration with our Associate Principal. Responsibilities include general Engagement Centre operations, behaviour management, implementing health and wellbeing programs and managing end of line non-academic student matters. To successfully fulfil the role, you should have considerable knowledge of policies and processes relating to student welfare and the ability to apply and explain this knowledge in a variety of situations and to a range of audiences.

One of your key responsibilities would be to develop and deliver programs that support Year 7 - 9 students across the school aligned with our Business Plan priorities.  This includes promoting the school’s values, positive education, and student care.

Positive public relations skills are integral, as the role includes liaising with parents and government and non-government agencies. Adopting and facilitating inclusive practices and building positive relationships with students, staff and the community are important components of the role. You should have a high level of skill working with Gifted and Talented students, students from diverse backgrounds, those with individual educational differences and those exhibiting challenging behaviours.

The suitable applicant will work with commitment to whole college approaches and initiatives and have a strong evidence-based approach.
