We are keen to hear from those of you who have an interest in the broad field of Fluid Mechanics. You will join a diverse community of colleagues based in the School of Mathematics, Statistics & Physics at Newcastle and will have access to our fluids laboratory housed in our newly renovated Stephenson Building. The position is funded through a Leverhulme Research Project Grant and includes a generous allowance for travel, training, and dissemination activities. The project will be supervised by Dr Magda Carr at Newcastle University and will involve collaboration with colleagues at the University of Bath, Loughborough University, Penn State University, the University of Waterloo and the New Jersey Institute of Technology. The project will investigate mode-2 internal solitary waves and involve a combination of laboratory-based research and numerical modelling.You will play a key role in performing the laboratory experiments, visualising, and measuring fluid flow, processing data, developing numerical simulations, and working as part of the wider team involved in the investigation. You will get the opportunity to collaborate with leading academics in the field and be encouraged to travel and disseminate your findings through conference participation and Journal publications.The role is full time, fixed term for a period of 30 months and the anticipated start date of 1 June 2024 is negotiable.You will be supervised by Dr Magda Carr at Newcastle University and in addition will work closely with co-investigators Dr Ricardo Barros (Loughborough University) and Prof Paul Milewski (University of Bath & Penn State University).This opportunity presents you with the following prospects:

  • Conduct experimental research in the field of mode-2 internal solitary waves
  • Conduct numerical simulations in the field of mode-2 internal solitary waves
  • Manage research work and the efficient use of resources
  • Manage various research activities simultaneously
  • Ensure project plans are completed and reviewed
  • Monitor project progress and deliver results within given schedules
  • Provide regular research project performance update reports to the project team
The Person (Essential)Knowledge, Skills and Experience
  • Experience in Experimental flow visualisation and measurement technologies and/or computational fluid dynamics
  • Knowledge in collection of data sets and data interpretation
  • Ability to work in collaboration with a multi-disciplinary team
  • Experience of, or exposure to article publications in high profile journals
  • Experience of, or exposure to the dissemination of research outputs to a range of audiences in a variety of formats and settings (e.g. peers, students, public; journal papers, conferences and web material)
Desirable
  • Good understanding of Experimental Fluid dynamics including particle image velocimetry
  • Good understanding of numerical computation of fluid dynamics including high-performance computing
  • Understanding of internal solitary waves
  • Very good communication and written skills
  • Demonstrate teaching skills
  • Knowledge in proposal writing

  • Experience of, or exposure to presenting and explaining research outputs in different ways

Qualifications
  • PhD awarded (for Associate level) or close to completion in fluid dynamics (or a closely related discipline area)
  • Honours degree (2.1 or higher) in mathematics, engineering, physical oceanography, or another relevant discipline
