Job description

The Australian Financial Security Authority (AFSA) is responsible for managing the application of bankruptcy and personal property securities laws through high-quality personal insolvency and trustee, regulation and enforcement, and personal property securities services. AFSA is an executive agency in the Attorney-General’s portfolio.

The Corporate Services Division is responsible for delivering Strategic Finance, Human Resources, Operations, Procurement and Project Coordination services to the Agency. 

The People and Capability (P&C) section provides the full suite of Human Resource (HR) services, and within this, the Work Health Safety & Wellbeing team is responsible for:

  • Providing specialised advice and supporting proactive management of injury prevention and management including case management of workers compensation matters; and
  • Maintaining and monitoring AFSA’s Work Health, Safety (WHS) management system and enabling organisational capability.
  • Promoting AFSA Mental Health Framework and the six pillars of wellbeing.

Purpose of the position

As a Senior Advisor, you will be part of small multi-disciplinary team and play a critical role in continuous improvement and maintaining AFSA’s WHS Management System in accordance with legislative and regulatory requirements to build a positive safety culture. The responsibilities for this position include WHS

compliance monitoring and reporting, risk management, policies/procedures and providing high level of WHS advice and support. 

Using your coaching and collaboration skills, you will work closely with staff and leaders, supporting them in managing health and safety priorities and will assist in the delivery of WHS and Wellbeing initiatives, aligned to AFSA’s People Plan and AFSA’s Vulnerability Framework.

Key accountabilities

Practice Management

  • Build and maintain a sustainable health and safety management system to ensure agency compliance with legislative and regulatory requirements.
  • Promote a positive safety culture through the active management of WHS management systems, including providing specialist advice, support, training and education to staff.
  • Apply contemporary risk management practice, undertake incident investigation and reporting, and facilitate WHS working groups including Health and Safety Representatives, First Aid Officers, and Emergency wardens.
  • Prepare regular reporting and analysis for AFSA’s senior leaders and governance committees, to assist in monitoring the effectiveness and compliance of AFSA’s WHS management system.
  • Provide secretariat support to AFSA’s National Health & Safety Committee.
  • Develop and maintain WHS policies, procedures and documentation, and contribute to solutions for challenging health and safety issues in partnership with relevant work groups.
  • Contribute to the design and implementation of health and Wellbeing initiatives, including through Employee Assistance Program (EAP) services and provider management, to support employees and a positive workplace culture.
  • As part of the P&C section, contribute to the innovation and continuous improvement of AFSA’s WHS and people management practices; including conducting research to inform initiatives, policies and guidelines.
  • Participate in networks and manage relationships with internal and external stakeholders including: Comcare, Building Management, Security, Property and Facilities or with other APS agencies.
