The role
The Senior ChemistIllicit Drugs will support the management of the Illicit Drug Group at FSQ by providing expert advice and guidance to peers and leading small teams of chemists.
Providing a high-level of knowledge, skills and experience to apply independent scientific judgement in the analysis of Illicit Drugs, you will also:
- Independently apply forensicexpertise andestablished specialised techniques tofacilitate complex, critical discipline specific scientific decisions with minimal supervision
- Provide expert testimony on work performed within the laboratory in accordance with legislative requirements
- Attend crime scenes or scenes of chemical incidents, or court to furnish evidence as required
- Apply high level evidence and judgement in advising senior management on quality service improvements to ensure that Forensic Chemistry complies with all relevant standards to meet NATA/ISO accreditation/certification requirements
- Possession of a relevant degree in the field of Science with a major emphasis in Chemistry
- A current class “C” driver's licence.
- Demonstrated high-level knowledge, expertise and skills in contemporary chemical analysis and in the specialised area of illicit drug analysis
- Demonstrated knowledge, skills and ability to provide scientific leadership without supervision in the assessment and processing of illicit drug exhibit handling, scientific testing and analysis of forensic items
- Proven ability to provide quality advice and analytical services with regards to the assessment of drug analysis in the field and analysis of exhibits of a complex nature
- Demonstrated interpersonal skills, with the ability to work effectively as a member of a team, perform duties in a safe and ethical manner, present expert testimony in a court of law and to communicate effectively with staff and clients both orally and in writing
- Personal resilience and adaptability and a professional, credible, customer and solutions focussed approach
Located at Coopers Plains, FSQ operates specialised Forensic Biology, Forensic Chemistry and Forensic Operations functions that provides forensic services and expert advice to the Queensland Police Service (QPS) and the Coroner's Court of Queensland.
Our work at FSQ involves exposure to material related to deaths and criminal offences that may be confronting, due to its graphic and personal nature. Sensitive and professional management of exhibits and information is a critical requirement of this role. The successful candidate will have personal qualities that include well developed resilience, tact and effective strategies for managing themselves and their ability to support colleagues in situations that may be distressing and stressful.
Please note that proposed legislative and structural changes may result in Forensic Science Queensland being moved to another agency within Queensland Public Sector.
