As a Senior Government Lawyer, you will work with a degree of independence under the direction and supervision of the General Counsel (EL2) and the Special Counsel (SES 1). You will have the opportunity to build a legal practice which allows you to embed core corporate legal skills, while also fostering a deep knowledge of statutory interpretation, legislative drafting and WHS laws.
The key duties of the position include
Your responsibilities will include:
- managing a caseload of matters and providing high quality, timely legal advice across a range of practice areas
- undertaking legal research and statutory interpretation to support the development of WHS and workers' compensation policy
- leading some of the Agency's legislative development projects, including instructing drafters and liaising with relevant stakeholders
- preparing briefing material for the Executive and other stakeholders on legal developments affecting the Agency, including practical options for implementation
- reviewing and determining policies and procedures to ensure legal accuracy and compliance
- supervising and mentor junior lawyers, including second counselling
- monitoring case law for any developments that may be relevant to the operation of the model WHS laws, workers' compensation or to the Agency's operations more generally
- monitoring legislation and policy developments to identify and keep up to date on public sector governance issues, and
- supporting the section's broader priorities, including building capability in the Agency through legal training and contributing to practice management improvements.
