About This Opportunity

TERN is an Australian Government initiative to enhance Australia's environmental research effort, particularly in the area of changes over space and time in biodiversity, land cover and carbon and water. The TERN infrastructure investments are distributed widely under contracts to other universities and CSIRO and are coordinated and managed nationally by the TERN Project Office, located at the University of Queensland (UQ) in Brisbane.

The Project Coordinator - Surface Elevation Tables will support the development of a monitoring network comprised of marine and coastal infrastructure called Surface Elevation Tables - Marker Horizon (SET-MHs) installations. The project aims to monitor the impacts of sea level rise and other environmental conditions on resilience of coastal wetlands to sea level rise around Australia. We will engage expert users of SET-MHs, develop standard monitoring protocols and make data available through TERN.

The coordinator will communicate across all stakeholders in the project and will keep TERN and the user group up to date on all activities occurring in the project. This includes coordinating events, e.g. joint user group meetings and field trips and interactions with TERN staff.

The position is based across the St Lucia Campus and Long Pocket site. Some travel may be required for the role.

Key responsibilities will include:
  • Coordinates activities of the project team including SET-MH user groups and TERN staff and liaise with broader TERN activities on behalf of the SET-MH users
  • Provides technical advice for new SET-MH users and TERN staff.
  • Develops technical guidelines, facilitates and undertakes field work including deployment of SET-MH instruments
  • Contributes to data analysis and development of monitoring network outputs, including Milestone reports
  • Assists in the preparation of project budgets to meet project activities timely and efficiently
  • Organizes project travel bookings, travel forms, Fieldwork Safety Plans and Risk Assessments
About You

We are looking for an experienced and highly motivated coastal wetland ecologist to support TERN's contribution to the Coasts RI project. The successful candidate will have a strong background in coastal wetland ecology and experimental ecology with significant experience and expertise with SET-MH instruments and their use and exceptional communication and stakeholder engagement skills.

  • Completion of undergraduate qualifications in coastal wetland ecology with subsequent relevant experience or an equivalent combination of relevant experience and/or education/training
  • Experience in convening scientific working groups and collaboration in large groups, including handling and analysis of large data sets, developing data sharing arrangements and archiving data
  • Experience in installation of Surface Elevation table - marker horizon instruments and use of Surface Elevation table-marker horizon methods and analysis of data streams from these instruments
  • Experience in field work in coastal wetland ecosystems
  • The ability to monitor budgets, financial reports and awareness of project monitoring and evaluation procedures, including submission of milestone documents.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication and interpersonal skills, ability to prioritise own workload, work independently and meet deadlines.

In addition, the following mandatory requirements apply:

  • Work Rights: You must have unrestricted work rights in Australia for the duration of this appointment to apply. Visa sponsorship is not available for this appointment.
