The Role
Applications are invited for a talented and ambitious Senior Research Associate to join us as we move into our second five year term of the , directed by Professors Falko Sniehotta and Emily Oliver.
Policy Research Units (PRUs) work closely with national government departments, and stakeholders, to inform and support decisionmaking concerning health and Social care policy. The unit is hosted by Newcastle University and comprises leading academics across an additional four institutions at University College London, Warwick University, London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicin, and University of Bedfordshire, providing an unrivaled opportunity for collaboration and support.
The role provides an outstanding opportunity for candidates to develop their skills, knowldege and reputation as an international thought leader in the application of the Behavioural and Social Sciences to policy.
Required skills will include: knowledge of a diverse range of research methods; high-level quantitative and/or qualitative data collection and analysis skills; the ability to publish work in high quality peer reviewed journals; the confidence to engage with collaborators at all levels of seniority, across different regions and sectors of the public health and health care system; an ability to support and mentor earlier career colleagues, and a willingness to work with research partners across multiple universities.
We are particularly interested in candidates who have advanced ethnographic, data modelling, or evidence synthesis skills. You will be appointed to a suitable point on the common pay scale according to qualifications and experience.
This is a full time post (40 hours per week), fixed term until 31 December 2028

Key Accountabilities

  • Show academic leadership in the application of behavioural sciences to health and Social care policy
  • Collaborate with internal and external partners to plan and lead high quality Behavioural and Social Sciences research
  • Successfully project manage research activity, supervising and taking responsibility for the research team and deliverables
  • Mentor/supervise/train earlier career colleagues
  • Engage in strategic leadership within the PRU, with a focus on public involvement and community engagement-related practice and policy
  • Publish research findings in peer reviewed journals
  • Present findings at conferences nationally and internationally
  • Identify and undertake a programme of professional development, including further training in research methods and other transferable skills
  • Develop research proposals and funding bids for prestigious funders (e.g. NIHR, MRC, ESRC), and be successful in obtaining funding
  • To contribute to the wider activities of the PHSI and Newcastle University
  • Carry out administrative tasks and other duties to support the PRU as required
The Person
Knowledge, Skills and Experience
  • Experience of conducting and leading high quality Behavioural and/or Social Sciences research in an academic environment
  • Evidence of ability to write for high quality peer reviewed publications with a strong publication record
  • Evidence of understanding and use of a range of research methods
  • Evidence of advanced qualitative or quantitative research skills
  • Ability to liaise and communicate with a wide range of external stakeholders
  • Ability to communicate research findings to diverse academic and practice-focused audiences using a variety of methods
  • Experience leading or contributing to initiatives or strategies relating to public involvement and community engagement
  • Ability to supervise and/or mentor other researchers
  • Experience of preparing research proposals for submission to competitive funding organisations (e.g. NIHR, research councils)
Desirable
  • Previous experience working with stakeholders in local, regional or national government
Attributes and Behaviours
  • Excellent organisational, communication and interpersonal skills
  • Ability to work flexibly and cooperatively with others
Qualifications
  • Degree in Psychology, Sociology, Economics or other relevant Behavioural and Social Science disciplines
  • A PhD awarded in a relevant subject
