Focus Minerals (FML) is a leading Australian gold explorer with tenure in Coolgardie and Laverton, two exciting gold regions in WA, and is the largest landholder in the Coolgardie goldfields with over 450sq km of tenements. Resumption of operations commenced in 2023 and FML has now commenced the planning and execution phase of bringing its Bonnie Vale underground operation online, located 10km north of its 1.2 Mtpa Three Mile Hill processing plant.

About the Role

The Work Health and Safety (WHS) Superintendent is to provide advice, technical expertise, and support for all Focus Minerals operations on all WHS issues by implementing systems and maintaining procedures and processes that support the Focus WHS Strategic Plan.

The role will provide WHS Service to Focus employees to assist them in providing a healthy and safe working environment. The WHS Superintendent will ensure that Focus meets and exceeds the legislative standards, and wherever possible, industry best practice.

Reporting to the Corporate WHS Manager and working back to back with a WHS Superintendent this permanent, full-time role is based in Coolgardie WA, an iconic mining town, with a new accommodation village that has been built within the Coolgardie township. The FIFO roster is primarily an 8/6 dayshift rotation from Perth or residential Kalgoorlie/Coolgardie region.

The key responsibilities of the role will include but are not limited to:

• Provide guidance, coaching, advice, and support to members of the WHS Team to assist in their development.
• Ensuring that WHS accountabilities and commitments are understood by employees and contractors
• Reviewing WHS documentation such as principal mining hazard management plans / procedures / risk assessments
• Maintenance of a WHS system that meets the organisational requirements and is positively received and utilised by FML management and employees 
• Providing WHS service and support to all areas of the business based at TMH and other FML sites
• Ensuring hazards are identified, and the associated risks are assessed and effectively managed
• Conducting risk reviews based on external information (bulletins from regulators etc)
• Assisting the Emergency Response Team 
• Incident review and leading of significant Investigations (ICAM)
• Conducting internal DMIRS HIF audits and contractor management audits to assess compliance and drive improvement 
• Maintaining alcohol and drug testing procedures and processes and fatigue management programs.
• Initial injury and illness management procedures
• Site access, induction and contractor management
• WHS Documents and records management 
• Continuous improvement initiatives throughout the operations 
• Maintaining site cost control and seek and advise WHS Manager on cost efficient measures and initiatives
• Coaching and mentoring staff providing technical assistance and advice

Desired Skills and Experience

• Minimum 5 years’ experience in WHS related positions, preferably in mining or heavy industry
• Tertiary qualified in Work Health and Safety or related field
• Certificate in Training and Assessment
• Certificate IV in Health Care - desirable
• Certificate III in Emergency Response and Rescue (BG4 Underground) - desirable
• Demonstrated knowledge of relevant WHS legal and other requirements (federal and state)
• Confidence to provide direction in the WHS field
• The ability to work at both tactical and operational levels
• High level communication skills, both verbally and written
• Strong interpersonal skills along with the ability to influence and/or persuade others
• Ability to influence without authority
• Able to work autonomously and flexibly
• Experience with PeopleTray software is desirable
• A passion for leading, developing and mentoring team members as well as liaising with senior leaders
• Most importantly a positive attitude, thirst for knowledge, the ability to learn and share knowledge with the desire for growth to build your career
• Respect for others and an all inclusive mind set
• Valid Driver's Licence
• National Police Clearance (within 3 months)
• Permanent work rights in Australia
