The Opportunity
The Work Health & Safety Officer plays a critical role in ensuring the safety and well-being of both staff, children and participants in our care and NDIS out of home care in our community services. As a WHS Officer, you will be responsible for implementing and maintaining a robust Health & Safety framework, including risk management processes and Safety issue monitoring. You will act as a bridge between our Management and Field Staff, offering expert guidance on WHS matters, legislation and best practices.
The Role
Based at our head office in South Perth, you will be responsible for ensuring the health, safety, and welfare of all staff and participants whilst working and living in the community or office. This is a newly created role that will see you working with existing safety policies and procedures, whilst allowing you full scope to improve, review and implement on the existing, to create an even more robust safe and healthy work environment.
To develop this, you will work closely with management and staff. You will possess excellent communication and interpersonal skills to effectively engage with staff at all levels of the organisation.
You will conduct site safety visits to our participant’s homes and also to youth homes. Therefore, an understanding and empathy for both youth and disability is essential, as well as having worked in the community environment in WHS previously.
The ideal candidate for this role will have a strong knowledge of workplace Health and Safety regulations and best practices within the community sector. Your ability to conduct risk assessments, develop safety programs, and deliver training will be crucial to your success in this role.
Responsibilities
- Conducting regular inspections and audits to identify potential hazards and ensure compliance with safety regulations
- Developing, reviewing and implementing safety policies, procedures, and initiatives
- Facilitating training sessions on Health and Safety topics for staff and management
- Investigating accidents and incidents to determine root causes and developing strategies to prevent reoccurrence
- Collaborating with management and staff to develop and implement emergency response plans
- Monitoring and analysing Health and Safety data to identify trends and areas for improvement
- Maintaining and updating safety records and documentation
Requirements
- A tertiary qualification or Cert IV in WHS and relevant WHS experience
- In-depth knowledge of WHS legislation and relevant standards
- Proven experience in a similar role (3 years ideally)
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team
- Knowledge and hands on experience of WHS within the community services sector (CPFS and/or NDIS)
