Technical Coordinator (Chemistry Research)

About the Role 

The Faculty of Science's organisational structure consists of two schools, two research institutes, administrative services, and Technical Services. Comprising of five discipline-based teams and an operations team, Technical Services is Faculty led, providing technical expertise and operational management for Academic Staff and students covering more than 100 teaching and research laboratories and ancillary spaces that includes a store and workshop.

The Faculty of Science is currently recruiting for a Technical Coordinator (Chemistry Research) to join their team on a full-time, continuing basis. The Technical Coordinator provides specialised technical expertise to the Faculty of Science to achieve its research objectives in the Chemistry discipline. The role coordinates laboratory operations with an emphasis on laboratory safety and support for analytical instrumentation. This role will be based on campus Monday to Friday.

In this role, you will:

• Conduct laboratory and equipment inductions

• Expertise in chemical handling and storage, developing guidelines, procedures, and training

• Provide competency-based training and booking access administration, maintaining operating procedures, and training records

• Schedule servicing, maintenance, and calibration of specialist laboratory equipment

• Ensure laboratories comply with health and safety requirements and conduct regular laboratory inspections

With examples, please outline in a separate document how you meet the following six (6) key selection criteria points:

1. Excellent written and spoken communication skills, including the ability to write/analyse technical reports and standard operating procedures.

2. Demonstrated experience in analytical chemistry in the operation and optimisation of liquid chromatography including liquid spectrometry with UV detection (HPLC-UV), liquid spectrometry mass spectrometry (LC-MS) including targeted analysis using triple quadrupole and non-targeted analysis using time-of-flight (TOF/Q-TOF) high resolution mass spectrometry.  Experience in inductively coupled mass spectrometry (ICP-MS) using triple quadrupole or tandem mass spectrometers or elementary knowledge of Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR) is desirable.

3. Demonstrated experience in sample preparation techniques for LC-MS and ICP-MS including solid phase extractions (SPE), solid phase microextraction (SPME), dispersive solid phase extraction (dSPE), microwave digestion techniques and robotic sample handling equipment.

4. Demonstrated experience in coordinating and providing safety inductions and technical training, and guidance.

5. Demonstrated experience in maintaining instruments in good working order, troubleshooting problems, and working with equipment vendors to identify repair options and feasible solutions. 

6. Demonstrated experience with implementing Health and Safety in a laboratory including conducting Health and Safety Work inspections, handling chemicals and chemical order safety endorsement.

Remuneration

Salary Range: $91,254 to $98,805 pa (HEW 6)

This role attracts 17% superannuation (pension) in addition to the base salary.
