In everything we do, we take an approach to protect, grow and innovate WA’s economy, community and environment.About the opportunityThere are currently three (3) permanent positions available for immediate filling.The Livestock Directorate is seeking a pool of experienced Technical Officers to join their Katanning Research Facility (KRS) team. The KRS plays an important role within DPIRD providing world-class research of sheep, pasture, and cropping practices. As a Technical Officer you will work within a collaborative environment, undertaking tasks in the day-to-day support and operation of the mixed sheep and crop enterprise, as well as technical support for research trials (livestock, crop, and pastures).Technical Officer Level 2 (farm technician) key responsibilities will include:
- Operating, maintenance and servicing of farm machinery and equipment.
- General farm maintenance including maintaining firebreaks, fences, water troughs/pipelines and weed control.
- Assisting with cropping and livestock activities.
- Daily sheep husbandry for the station’s 3000 merino and maternal ewes.
- Collecting and recording performance data and research samples.
- Assisting with general farm maintenance and cropping activities to support the sheep program.
- Coordination and implementation of the station’s 1500ha cropping and pasture program, including operation of agricultural machinery.
- Maintaining and developing networks with local businesses and contractors to ensure availability of required resources, materials, and equipment.
- Mentoring, supervising, and training junior staff in operation of agricultural machinery.
- Assisting with livestock program and general farm maintenance when required.
- Knowledge, experience and/or background in livestock, cropping or farming systems, and an understanding of field research techniques and methods.
- A can-do attitude, with high level communication skills and the ability to work independently, and collaboratively within a team environment.
- The ability to problem solve issues as they arise in day-to-day tasks and the ability to prioritise tasks in a fast paced, changing environment.
- Enthusiastic approach to working with livestock using low-stress stock handling techniques, as well as established skills to operate agricultural machinery or the willingness to learn these skills.
