About the opportunity
This is an exciting opportunity to work with two experienced research scientists on a range of vegetable and fruit crops in a program conducting innovative research. This role is responsible for the management of experiments conducted under the state-of-the-art protected cropping facilities and field conditions in vegetable and fruit crops. Assisting research scientists with field operations the role will involve helping establish and manage trials while conducting activities such as fertilising, pruning, irrigation management, taking of physiological and agronomic measurements on the trials and keeping records of experimental history.
The incumbent will be a passionate team player focussing on research achievements. Innovative to establish new techniques, have the initiative to learn new skills and functionalities of experimental equipment.
If you have knowledge and experience of agricultural crops, with a background in vegetables and perennial fruit trees, growing vegetables under protected cropping structures, growing crops in soilless media would be highly advantageous.
There is currently one (1) three (3) year, fixed-term position available for immediate filling.
We are looking for individuals with:
- Skills and experience in managing scientific experiments of agricultural crops;
- Proven ability to take agronomic and physiological observations and data;
- Excellent time management skills;
- Certificate in a relevant discipline with some experience or a considerable level of relevant experience (Level 2);
- Diploma in a relevant discipline with relevant practical experience or substantial relevant experience (Level 3 and Level 4)
Key responsibilities are but not limited to:
- Maintain protected cropping facilities and nursery facilities and manage operational tasks in these facilities and the field.
- Follow experimental protocols to conduct research, including preparation, planting, spraying, plant training, harvest, weighing, and analysis.
- Manage accurate electronic and hard copy database for physiological, agronomic and climatic observations, crop yield data, and experimental records.
- Assist in data analysis, writing reports and project updates, and achieving project milestones.
- Adopt and apply OH&S policies and procedures to ensure a safe work environment.
