Achieve are looking for a Technical Officer (T03) for work in Toowoomba
As our Technical officer, you will:
Collaborate with project leaders and other team members on a range of research projects including: field trials monitoring changes in weed populations with different management strategies; field testing the crop safety of herbicides in pigeon pea; field surveys to collect weed samples for herbicide resistance screening; field assessment of residual herbicides and their persistence; and, glasshouse research evaluating weed populations to identify herbicide resistance.
Assist with field research - maintaining trials at Hermitage Research Station (near Warwick) and Wellcamp (west of Toowoomba) including manual removal of background weeds; establishing field sites and application of herbicide, crop and weed treatments; collecting data including plant and seed samples (weed and crop); collecting soil samples manually or via machine; and assessment of herbicide efficacy (seed samples collected, hand harvesting crop).
Assist in undertaking controlled environment experiments (glasshouse, growth rooms and cabinets and shade house) which will include managing a large number of seed lots, intricate establishment of weed seedlings (transplanting/thinning), the application of herbicides using a motorised spray cabinet and assessment of herbicide efficacy.
Making observations and accurately recording data from field and controlled environment trials. Entering data into spreadsheets ready for analysis.
Assist with organising and carrying out weed surveys across key cropping regions of Queensland, including liaising with land managers (farmers and agronomists) and other team members to arrange the survey.
Ideally you will have a knowledge of weeds and/or crops, their growth and management and a knowledge of field trial operations.

Essential requirements:
Hold (or be willing to obtain) a current Commercial Operators License for the safe application of herbicides.
Hold a current ‘C’ class driver licence.
Diploma in Applied Science, Rural Science, or Rural Techniques from a recognised tertiary institution, or equivalent qualifications in a field relevant to the position.
For international qualifications, the applicant will need their qualification assessed, to determine comparability with the Australian Qualifications Framework. The Department of Employment, Small Business and Training can assist with these assessments for Queensland residents.
Technical requirements
Ability to manually assess weed populations by conducting counts before and after herbicide treatment. This may require prolonged periods of bending or operating close to the ground.
Ability to successfully establish and maintain weed and crop populations in the field, glasshouse and controlled environments.
You will ideally have knowledge of and experience in herbicide application, evaluation of weed populations and maintenance of field sites and controlled environment experiments.
Hours of work:
Monday - Friday 36.25hrs per week as directed by your Supervisor.
The role will require overnight travel on occasion. When field surveys are being conducted there will be travel away from the office for up to 2 weeks at a time.
