The Pawsey Supercomputing Research Centre is a tier-1 high-performance computing facility accelerating scientific discoveries for Australia's researchers. Located in Perth, Western Australia, Pawsey is currently serving scientists across the nation in domains such as radio astronomy, energy and resources, engineering, bioinformatics and health sciences. Pawsey supports Australia's commitment to the Square Kilometre Array (SKA) and Australian pathfinder projects (ASKAP and MWA). The Centre is managed through a long-standing and successful unincorporated joint venture of the CSIRO, Curtin University, Murdoch University and The University of Western Australia, and supported by funding from the Western Australian and Federal governments. As lead agent for the Pawsey Supercomputing Centre, the CSIRO employs Pawsey Supercomputing Centre staff.
Pawsey's Visualisation Team provides various visualisation services to Australian research community. The Visualisation System Engineer will be part of the visualisation team and be responsible for managing the Visualisation Systems to meet service expectations. The Visualisation System Engineer will collaboratively work with Pawsey's Scientific Platforms staff to make sure the visualisation infrastructures are configured in line with best practices and meet cybersecurity standards. A technical aptitude, strong interpersonal skills and a desire to learn are essential to support services and to adapt new technologies. This role provides an environment to use and expand your technical and communications skills to prepare you for the career development opportunities available within Pawsey, CSIRO and other National and International computing centres.
The key duties of the position include
- Be responsible for system setup and configuration of Pawsey visualisation infrastructure, including but not limited to remote visualisation, filesystems and object storage, supercomputers, high performance Windows/Linux clusters and fast parallel filesystems as well as underpinning web services (reservation system, remote visualisation platform).
- Stay up to date with new technologies, trends and best practices in visualisation platforms. Evaluate those technologies and recommend them to improve Visualisation System and service capabilities.
- Monitor system performance, identify bottlenecks and optimise visualisation infrastructure to improve user experience.
- Plan and perform maintenance on visualisation infrastructure, including liaising with key stakeholders regarding timing and scope of maintenance.
- Manage faults and maintenance interactions with vendors.
- Provide technical solutions to contribute to the procurement of additional infrastructure to enhance Pawsey supercomputing visualisation services.

To be considered you will need:
Essential:
- Tertiary and/or Graduate qualification in Science, Computing or Engineering.
- Minimum of 10 years' experience in the administration Linux/Unix/Windows systems.
- Demonstrated success in managing computer systems in a research or operational environment.
- High-level skills in the use of C or C++ and scripting languages such as Perl or python, including source code management.
- Demonstrated ability & willingness to contribute novel ideas and approaches in support of scientific investigations.
- Strong understanding of GPU technologies, key supercomputing technologies, resource scheduling/policies, use and provision of web services, portals, scripting, workflow tools, and automations using Ansible.
- Experience in scientific workflow management and compilation of scientific applications.
- Experience in providing services to research domains, including engaging with researchers to determine requirements.
