Your Role
An APS 5 Work Health and Safety Officer is accountable under limited direction to perform and achieve Work Health and Safety work within an integrated workforce. They are accountable to have and maintain a well-developed understanding of and compliance to relevant legislative frameworks, government decision-making and Defence's mission and policy requirements.
An APS 5 Work Health and Safety Officer will be accountable for organising their workflow and making independent decisions relating to their area of responsibility. They will interpret and provide advice within the strategic welfare function area based on legislation, policy and procedures. They will undertake specialist research and analysis, conduct reviews, assessment, investigations and perform procedural, clerical and administrative support work to achieve results.
The APS 5 Work Health and Safety Officer will contribute to the work of a team consistent to a work plan and provide assistance on methods of task completion to team members.
The APS 5 Work Health and Safety Officer will be required to engage and communicate with stakeholders to identify, respond and provide advice on issues to achieve work unit and Defence outcomes. They will be accountable to contribute towards ongoing self-improvement and professional development.

The successful candidate will have:

- Knowledge of the Work Health and Safety Act 2011.
- A background in Work Health and Safety is desirable.
The successful candidate will:
- Develop and maintain relationships with customers, enabling partners, contractors, stakeholders and external agencies.
- Provide operational Work Health and Safety support and advice, as well as specialist safe workplace advice to the South East Zone staff and contractors.
- Perform Work Health and Safety incident management and investigation, including working collaboratively with contractors to ensure that all WHS incidents are properly reported and investigated.
- Assist the Directorate of WHS (DWHS) by supporting Comcare with any Zone associated WHS incident investigations.
- Assist with the identification of risk and determining controls for the mitigation of risk.
- Assist base support teams by providing subject matter expertise with the maintenance of the base common area risk assessments.
