About the position
The Youth Support Service (YSS) is an early intervention crime prevention program working with young people aged 10-17 who are at risk of entering the criminal justice system. The program aims to divert young people from criminal justice system involvement through providing short term case management and linkages to longer term supports. We are seeking a motivated and dynamic worker to join our team as a Youth & Family Worker who will provide outreach support to young people, including interventions that target the whole family, particularly parents/carers, as well as intake duties and other program needs required. It is a dynamic role that incorporates general youth work and family work. Applicants from Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander, Maori, Pasifeka, African and other CALD backgrounds as well as applicants who identify as LGBTQIA+ are encouraged to apply.
Some of your key responsibilities will be:
- Understanding of and experience in utilising case-management principles to engage young people at risk of entering the Criminal Justice System, especially those who have had recent contact with Victoria Police
- Skills in engaging and working with young people (and where required, their families), ranging from, advocacy, conducting street based outreach, case management, intake and group work
- Ability to organise work and regularly track client outcomes and progress to give them the best chance of reaching their goals within YSS program time-frames
- Demonstrating understanding the needs, issues and sensitivities of people from diverse backgrounds including Aboriginal, LGBTQIA+ and culturally and linguistically diverse young people communities
- Understanding of adolescent development and specific circumstances which impact on consent and family involvement. Inherent in this is the ability to communicate effectively with family members and involve family members in assessment and support plans
- Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively with stakeholders particularly Courts, family services, mental health providers, schools, and other community youth support services
