Job description

Who are we?

Gilchrist Connell is a leading insurance sector law firm operating across all Australian jurisdictions from its five offices in Perth, Sydney, Adelaide, Brisbane and Melbourne. Our particular focus is on general insurance, employment, recoveries, and defendant-side dispute resolution. We also provide corporate and commercial advice and front-end solutions to businesses throughout all stages of their life cycle.

In recognition of our excellence in the insurance sector, Australasian Lawyer named Gilchrist Connell as the 2023 Insurance Specialist Firm of the Year.

For the fourth consecutive year, Gilchrist Connell is one of only 31 firms recognised as an Australasian Lawyer Employer of Choice. Certified as a Family Friendly Workplace and Great Place to Work, the Firm adheres to best practice in supporting employees to meet their work, family and wellbeing needs.

We believe that partnering with sophisticated clients on high quality work and enjoying a rewarding personal life should not be mutually exclusive. The firm has a genuinely positive work culture, built on transparency in feedback, support of flexible working practices, leading support programs and employee benefits.

Who are you?

To be successful in this role, you will preferably (though not essential) have experience in a legal administrative position, or a genuine interest in an administrative role in the legal industry. You’ll have strong MS Office proficiency, impeccable organisation and self-management skills, and at least 50 wpm accurate typing skills. We also value a sense of humour and the ability to make the office an enjoyable and friendly place to work.

Other than that, we’ll leave it up to you to tell us why you’re the right person to join us! Please submit your application in Word format.

What does a standard week look like?

  • Answering calls, preparation of correspondence and liaison with clients
  • Filing (physical and electronic) and diary management
  • Collecting mail and groceries for the office
  • Electronic filing of court documents
  • Attending court to scan or print documents
  • Deliveries and collections within the CBD
  • Attending to client needs when attending the office
  • Billing (using Affinity)
  • Preparation of office morning or afternoon teas
  • Any other ad-hoc administrative tasks as your skills grow

The Traineeship

As part of this entry-level role, you will complete a Certificate III in Business Administration (Legal) / Legal Services. A prerequisite of this is that you have not previously completed a Certificate III or higher qualification already.  As part of your usual duties, time will be set aside each week for you to be able to study to complete the necessary competencies needed in house.  To be suitable for this role, you will require a genuine interest in the legal profession, have proficient written and oral English and a willingness to learn.

What do we offer you?

  • A great and dynamic culture! Our firm has a true collegiate buzz and is growing in response to client demand. Our partners are accessible and supportive and have a genuine willingness to involve you in client relationships at a high level.
  • Flexibility to manage your time. Be efficient, get your work done, and go enjoy your personal life.
  • Responsibility for and meaning in your work. We believe that you have to enjoy your work and be given the ownership to make decisions and solve problems for sophisticated and knowledgeable clients.
  • We are committed to fostering a truly diverse and inclusive workplace so that all our people can flourish and fulfil their highest potential, for the benefit of our people, the firm, and our clients.
  • We recognise our role as a corporate citizen and invest in a standalone pro bono practice and community response.
  • Access to professional development opportunities through our internal GC Learning program and leading external providers.
  • A competitive salary and firm wide, team or individual incentives when you least expect it but deserve it.
  • Group Salary Continuance (GSC) at the firm’s cost.
  • Extensive parental leave entitlements over and above government allowances.
  • A comprehensive Wellbeing and EAP service available for you and your family.

To be successful in this role, you will have at least 6 months of office experience and great attention to detail. You will have strong MS Office proficiency, impeccable organisation and self-management skills with a strong ability to prioritise your day and tasks. We also value a sense of humour and the ability to make the office an enjoyable and friendly place to work.

If this opportunity sounds of interest, please talk to our People Advisor Georgia Steele on 08 8215 7*** for more information. Otherwise, we’ll leave it up to you to tell us why you’re the right person to join us! Hit apply now to submit your CV and cover letter.

A quick note to agencies – we don’t need support with this role at present. Thank you.
