About This Opportunity
The primary purpose of this position is to support the Australian Research Council Centre of Excellence for Indigenous Futures (ARC-IFC) through strategic and operational management of the Centre’s nationally dispersed activities. The role is also responsible for performing a wide range of complex finance and research management related activities which determine how objectives will be achieved and how resources will be deployed to achieve outcomes. The position is responsible with the ARC-IFC Chief Operations Officer (COO) for developing and sustaining effective working relationships with existing Australian and international university and industry collaborators to better understand stakeholder needs and to enable the delivery of high quality operational and research support services.
Key responsibilities will include:
Relationship and Research Management
Develop strong relationships with an extensive network of internal and external stakeholders, including academic and professional staff at Centre collaborating institutions, to understand business needs, deliver effective, consistent services and to enable data collection for external statutory reports and research collaborations.
Monitor compliance and risk management of the Centre’s obligations with the Australian Research Council (ARC), other funding agencies, university, industry, government and community partners as outlined in agreements. This includes policies relating to publications, Intellectual Property (IP), authorship, and assets.
Develop, review and maintain performance trend analyses of the Centre’s KPIs to inform Centre strategy and operations and to optimise achievement of the Centre’s objectives.
Ensure all business support functions of the Centre are efficient and effective and meet compliance with the ARC and University requirements.
Direct all aspects of Centre governance and management committees, including drafting and/or preparing position and policy papers as well as other meeting papers.
Financial Management
Provide expert strategic, timely and accurate financial information and advice to the COO and Director for research grants income and expenditure across the entire Centre, including nodes at other institutions, by monitoring and reporting the Centre’s budgets & expenditure by program and portfolio.
In consultation with the Director, COO, and Senior Management Accountant as required, develop multi-year budgets with budgeting & forecasting, budget model projections, scenario analysis, and allocation planning across all Centre nodes. Apply project tools and processes for periodic expenditure reporting, variance management and compliant interpretation of grant rules by project leaders in the Centre.
Produce all reports for the Centre, including the collation of financial data from other Centre Nodes. Monitor and report against the budget and KPIs established for the Centre.
Develop and maintain strong relationships with the UQ Finance Professional Services Team to ensure Centre compliance with UQ financial policies and procedures, governance protocols, and risk management frameworks, as well as any legislative requirements.
Manage the escalation of any inconsistencies, budget variances (monthly and year-to-date), incorrectly allocated expenses, and breaches in University policy to the Centre Director and COO, as well as any relevant Program Managers.
Proactively engage with Centre Chief Investigators to facilitate communication of the Centre’s financial strategy, fostering a culture of collaboration and effectively addressing complex financial matters.
Identify and lead initiatives to develop financial and administrative acumen among the Centre’s Node Administrators to ensure the provision of accurate, timely and informative advice on routine matters to research staff at their respective Nodes.
Liaise with the Financial Services Coordinator to ensure timely and accurate financial transactions for the UQ Node.

This is a part time 0.8FTE fixed-term position for up to 3 years.
At HEW level 8, the full-time equivalent base salary will be in the range $106,838.31 - $119,780.70, plus a generous super allowance of up to 17%. The total FTE package will be up to $125,000.82 - $140,143.42 annually. As this role is covered by an Enterprise Agreement, you will also receive regular remuneration increases – at least once a year.
About You
Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander peoples are strongly encouraged to apply
Postgraduate qualifications in a relevant area or progress towards postgraduate qualifications and extensive relevant experience in a University or similar environment; or extensive relevant experience and management expertise; or an equivalent combination of relevant experience and/or education/training
Substantial knowledge of and experience with research development and innovation processes, with significant experience in project management and associated trend analysis and reporting with the ability to work well under pressure and constant concurrent deadlines.
Highly developed interpersonal, influencing, and negotiation skills with demonstrated ability to build both internal and external relationships and networks with key stakeholders.
Highly developed written communication skills and a demonstrated ability to write formal proposals and documentation to a publishable standard for a highly educated audience.
Ability to use judgement, act independently, and use initiative to solve problems.
Ability to show innovative leadership and provide critical advice and clarity of direction for a complex research centre (spanning disciplines, cultures, career stage, gender, community, industry, government).
Desirable
Experience working with Indigenous communities
Experience working in a research centre or a multi-institutional organisation.
