About Blak Fig and First Peoples’ Health and Wellbeing
Blak Fig is a social enterprise training café set to open in mid-2024. It is an initiative created by First Peoples’ Health and Wellbeing with the aim of improving the social and emotional wellbeing of Aboriginal people across the Frankston, Mornington Peninsula region, by creating meaningful employment and training opportunities in a culturally safe environment.
Blak Fig is aimed to improve the social and emotional wellbeing of Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander peoples. It will achieve this through providing training, education and real life experience, along with mentoring and creating pathways to sustainable jobs beyond café-related roles through exposure to the health and wellbeing sectors.
A portion of the cafe space will be dedicated to showcasing boutique items from Aboriginal businesses, such as native cooking ingredients, homewares, and giftware.
First Peoples’ Health and Wellbeing (FPHW) is a dynamic Aboriginal community-controlled health service aiming to improve access to trauma-informed comprehensive primary health care and Social Emotional Wellbeing Services in Frankston and Thomastown.

About the role
The Café Manager plays a critical role in the establishment and management of Blak Fig. This role is responsible for overall management of the café and giftware operations on a day-to-day basis as well as leading and supporting trainees within the cafe. They are responsible for the successful performance, quality, service and overall standards to ensure the efficient running of the social enterprise. The role will work collaboratively with current and potential partner organisations and corporate sponsorships. This position reports to Chief Executive Officer of First Peoples’ Health and Wellbeing.
About you
You will be deeply passionate about the hospitality industry and have a strong sense of social justice. You will be a friendly, warm and engaging person with strong and reliable organisational skills, demonstrating the ability to multi-task and prioritise. You will have previous experience establishing and managing cafes or restaurants. You will be patient, nurturing and enthusiastic about teaching/training others. You will be professional and kind when building strong relationships and trust with staff, trainees and partnership organisations and businesses.
Essential
- Three years’ experience establishing and managing cafes or restaurants
- Barista and Food Safety Supervisor certificates
- Sound understanding of food safety and handling standards
- Ability to interact in a friendly and respectful way with customers, staff, and trainees at all levels with a strong customer service focus
- Well-developed interpersonal and organisational skills showcasing your leadership and managerial skills and knowledge
- Ability to oversee stock control, menu planning, cost analysis and reporting; rostering, team building and training skills
- A high level of integrity, trustworthiness, and reliability
Desirable
- First Aid & CPR
- Café, Hospitality, or management related certificates
- Cultural Awareness Training
- Experience with POS systems such as Lightspeed, Tanda, Square, Open Table and Xero is a plus
