About the Role:
Goulburn Valley Area Mental Health & Wellbeing Service (GVAMHWS) is a department of GV Health that aims to reduce the impact of mental illness for individuals, families and the community using a recovery based approach for people with Mental Health problems and their carers/families to realise their full potential. The adult community Mental Health program provides treatment, care & support to people aged between 18 and 64 years of age.
The Carer Consultant uses their lived expereince of caring for someone with a mental illness to understand the needs of families and carers using the Mental Health service. This “experiential’ knowledge complements the “professional” knowledge of the clinical team, and is a vital component of support for families and carers. This position is important in continuing to strengthening carer participation in an expanding environment of carer leadership and input across GVAMHWS and to assist with service improvement through engagement between the carers and the service.
The successful candidate will have:
- Direct personal experience as a family member or carer of a person with a mental illness, and of the public Mental Health system.
- Demonstrate understanding of the principles of peer support and the ability to utilise own experience constructively for the benefit of others
- Broad understanding of the impact of mental illness on families and other carers, including differing carer perspectives.
- Ability to work closely with a wide variety of families, other carers, staff and relevant committees using both verbal and written skills.
