THE OPPORTUNITY
Data and/or Open Source Analyst (Level 4-6)
We are currently recruiting for a Data Analyst and an Open Source Analyst, and recognise some candidates may meet requirements of both roles. As a Data or Open Source Analyst in ASIS, you will have the opportunity to develop and lead a variety of projects. Using or building knowledge of a geographic or thematic subject area you will systematically collect, interpret and analyse available information relating to matters of political, strategic or economic significance to Australia to contribute to ASIS operational outcomes.
All positions are office-based and located in Adelaide or Canberra.
At level 6, we are looking for someone with excellent communication skills, critical thinking skills and a creative approach to problem solving. The ideal candidate will have a strong understanding of the Open Source information environment, as well as proficiency in data analytics or coding, however these are not pre-requisites and anyone with experience in Open Source intelligence or data analytics or related fields are encouraged to apply.
At levels 4-5, we expect some existing skillsets or relevant qualifications who will contribute to building experience as a data or Open Source Analyst under the guidance of a more senior practitioner. Ability to access training and upskilling courses as well as ASIS specific training will be provided to all applicants.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES AND TASKS
The following is an overview of key responsibilities and tasks:
Level 4-5
- Collect and interpret information about specific topics of importance to ASIS;
- Identify and describe trends or patterns in complex data sets or geographic areas;
- Explore and implement effective collection methodologies;
- Monitor and analyse online media platforms, social media and other sources of information;
- Work with stakeholders to understand and prioritise information needs;
- Identify actionable information in collaboration with cross-functional teams by providing comprehensive analysis;
- Create reports and presentations to communicate findings to stakeholders; and
- Demonstrated proficiency in coding languages such as Python (or similar) for data analysis desirable.
Level 6
All of the above plus:
- Foster a data driven culture and support business areas to achieve operational outcomes;
- Contribute to training materials and guide team member development; and
- Engage with customers to identify potential benefits from the application of data science or Open Source information, including identifying relevant data and analytic opportunities.

EDUCATION, QUALIFICATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS
The following education, qualifications and/or experience will be highly regarded:
- Proficiency in using various online tools and databases for research;
- Experience in Open Source intelligence analysis desirable; and
- Language proficiency will be well regarded, but not compulsory.
