The Victorian Aboriginal Health Service (VAHS) was established in 1973 to address the specific medical needs of Victorian Aboriginal communities. 2023 marked a landmark year as VAHS proudly celebrated it’s 50-year of providing a comprehensive range of medical, dental, allied health and social services for our community.
As well as providing a variety of medical services, VAHS is committed to supporting the well-being of the community through contributions to community events and activities. VAHS is also committed to assisting research into the ongoing needs of the community.

About the Opportunity
The position provides responsibility/accountability for the clinical practice of the Dental Assistant team, including mentoring, supervision, and assisting with annual performance planning. This position also coordinates the day-to-day clinical activities to ensure a smooth running of the service.
The position provides infection control auditing and reporting across both clinical and sterilisation activities, as required.
The position is responsible for the management and maintenance of instrument inventory, and the consumables ordering process in line with budgets, and in consultation with Senior Dentist and Program Lead.

Essential Skills & Experience
- The capability and engagement to understand the philosophy and principles of Aboriginal Community Control and transforming it into practice.
- Significant clinical experience in chairside Dental Assisting in a public dental service.
- Demonstrated understanding and commitment to the principles of public health.
- Proven Infection Control managerial experience with coaching and mentoring ability
- Sound knowledge, understanding and expertise in Infection Control principles, including AS/NZ 4187:2014
- Demonstrated leadership experience.
- Relevant audit experience.
- Understanding of and Commitment to the Aboriginal community.

- Conflict resolution knowledge and ability to assess conflict confidently and apply sound judgment within organisational policies.
- Able to utilise skills to effectively build rapport with staff, clients, and external partnerships with a focus on stakeholder management.
- Commitment to oral health promotion principles

- Demonstrates perseverance in achieving objectives and copes effectively with setbacks and problems.
- Identify continuous quality improvement opportunities and act upon when/where relevant.
Qualifications / Registrations Requirements
- Certificate III in Dental Assisting (essential)
- Cert IV in Dental Assisting (preferred)
- Hand Hygiene Auditor (essential)
- Hand Hygiene Auditor Educator (preferred)
- Must have a minimum of three (3) COVID-19 vaccinations prior to the Commencement Date
