The Role
The Deputy Director Ministerial Liaison - Air Force is accountable under broad direction to achieve complex ministerial and parliamentary work within an integrated workforce. They will require knowledge of and compliance with legislative frameworks, government decision-making and Defence's mission and policy requirements. The Deputy Director exercises a considerable degree of independence and performs a leadership role. They will exercise sound decision making and judgement to provide expert policy advice. They will engage in very complex problem solving and issues management and may coordinate and perform detailed or sensitive projects that impact on strategic, political or operational outcomes for Defence. The Deputy Director will be responsible for actively managing key stakeholder relationships and will be required to identify relevant stakeholders' expectations and concerns to develop and communicate practices to achieve outcomes. This position has people management responsibilities and as such you will be required to exercise your people management skills and knowledge to lead a high performing team.
The duties of the Deputy Director include:
- Manage the development and preparation of ministerial, parliamentary documentation.
- Prepare very complex and sensitive ministerial and parliamentary correspondence, briefs and submissions.
- Operate within legislation, policies, strategies and business or team plants to achieve ministerial and parliamentary outcomes.
- Explain very complex information and consider the ramification of issues on the impact and implications of ministerial and parliamentary business to the work area and more broadly.
- Influence and manage relationships with internal and external stakeholders.
- Negotiate with internal and external stakeholders to achieve agreed outcomes.
- Analyse and assess submissions to ensure compliance with Ministerial and Parliamentary requirements and broader Defence policies.
- Assess the future and considers longer-term implications of work to recommend courses of action in line with Defence's strategic plan.
- Provides clear direction and advice to stakeholders on ministerial and parliamentary products.

The Royal Australian Air ForceMinisterial Liaison Office (RAAF MLO) is a blended team of APS and Military staff responsible for the coordination of ministerial and parliamentary documentation for Government on behalf of Air Force. RAAF MLO is the steward of key relationships within Air Force and the Department as it relates to parliamentary and ministerial business. Our team values each person's unique characteristics, skills, and experience and work in a collaborative and supportive manner to achieve outcomes for Air Force. RAAF MLO are the central point for coordinating clearance of all Air Force Ministerial and parliamentary products between Air Force and the Defence Ministers. This includes facilitating input to and from internal and external stakeholders, coordinating and supporting visits to Air Force bases and establishments including the development of briefing material as required. RAAF MLO also supports the ADF Parliamentary Program and Exchange.
