Job description

Mitchelton Special School is now accepting applications for a motivated, enthusiastic and innovative individual to join their leadership team as Deputy Principal (Special Education). This is a temporary full-time position until 13 December 2024 unless otherwise determined. It is essential for the successful applicant to have strong organisational and communication skills, the capability to lead a coaching culture to support pedagogical approaches, a well- developed understanding of how to support staff working with students accessing Individual curriculum plans (ICP - DYL-P), ICP - Highly individualised curriculum plans (HICP) and QCIA. The successful applicant will need to be able to demonstrate they work well in a team along with the ability to lead teams.

About Mitchelton Special School:

At Mitchelton Special School we provide educational programs for students aged between 3 and 18. All students who attend our school have been diagnosed with an Intellectual Disability and many have also been diagnosed with additional disabilities such as Autism, Hearing Impairment, Visual Impairment and/or Physical Impairment. Mitchelton Special School students, families and staff are proud to be part of the connected and caring Mitchie community. We strive to enact our school vision of ‘live to learn, learn to live' in every teachable moment. Our teaching and learning standards are excellent, and we are committed to providing differentiated, age-appropriate motivating learning opportunities for all of our students. We use a variety of pedagogies to assist our students to reach their learning goals such as Positive Behaviour for Learning (PBL), Community Based Learning (CBL) and Explicit Teaching.

Your Role:
As the Deputy Principal you will:

  • Improve the educational outcomes of students in their schools
  • Develop the quality of teaching and learning
  • Nurture positive relationships between students, teachers, the community and stakeholders.

Responsibilities include:

  • Assist the Principal to lead the Secondary cohort of the school community to develop, articulate and commit to a shared educational vision focussed on providing quality learning outcomes for all students.
  • Deputise for the Principal when required.
  • Uphold the Deputy Principalship as a values based, ethical and moral activity.
  • Embed socially just practices in daily school life.
  • Set high standards for student and staff performance.
  • Actively participate in lifelong learning and ongoing professional development.
  • Form partnerships with parents, other government agencies, community groups, industry and business.
  • Be futures oriented and strategic.
  • Understand the legislation and policies that impact on schooling especially in relation to students with disability.
  • Manage the human, financial, facilities and curriculum resources of the Secondary school to achieve goals
