EL 1 Senior Lawyer - AAT | $840 to $1190 daily rate inclusive of super| Initial 2 month contract - possible 3 month extension | Canberra - Geelong – Melbourne – Sydney – Brisbane
The Role
Our client is seeking an experienced lawyer at the EL 1 level to support the Administrative Appeals Branch of a high profile Commonwealth agency working primarily in matters before the Administrative Appeals Tribunal (AAT).
This is a leadership position within the agency and you will have demonstrated leadership and management skills. The successful candidate will be required to manage a large case load of AAT cases, represent the agency in AAT appearances, advise on administrative decision-making and assist in the professional development of more junior team members.
The Responsibilities
Responsibilities for the position will include:
- appearing at case conferences and hearings;
- providing advice to the CEO, Deputy CEOs and case managers and instructing counsel in hearings;
- briefing external lawyers and counsel;
- leading a team of lawyers running AAT matters, both in-house and as instructors to external firms;
- assisting with the development of the in-house legal practice;
- managing the priorities of clients and available resources (including staff) to deliver results on time and within budget;
- preparing and contributing to a range of written material, including briefing material for ministers; and
- continuing development of systems, processes and practical tools including training to support alternative dispute resolution and good administrative decision-making.
The Requirements
The successful candidate will have outstanding communication skills, sound analytical abilities and advanced dispute resolution skills.
Previous Commonwealth experience advising on AAT matters would be highly regarded.
Admission as a legal practitioner and experience in administrative law and legal practice are essential.
