Witjimaliny KuutitjaAboriginal Guardianship Support Service 

We are seeking a deadly, dynamic and experienced team player in the community and Aboriginal services sectors to join the new Witjimaliny Parray ngaatany Kuutjita (Bringing Together Country and Kin) Aboriginal Guardianship Family Support Service in the position of Guardianship Family Support Worker.  The Mindaribba Local Aboriginal Land Council is honoured to support the pilot of the Aboriginal Guardianship Support Service for the Hunter region, which is proudly funded by AbSec, the Child, Family and Community Peak Aboriginal Corporation, in partnership with the Department of Communities and Justice.

The objective of the service is to ensure Aboriginal children and young people in guardianship care and their families have access to the supports they need to experience better social wellbeing and good health; and enable them to be more culturally secure, connected and resilient.

The service will operate from January 2022 until December 2024 under the trial support model, which was informed by the insights, feedback and ideas shared with AbSec from guardians and families impacted by the transition to guardianship since 2014/15. 

This is a full-time position, 38 hours per week (SCHADS Award). 

About You

  • Being Aboriginal is a genuine occupational qualification for these positions under Section 31 of the Anti-Discrimination Act 1977 (NSW).
  • Commitment to the delivery of quality and evidence-based practice to meet the individual needs of those who we support
  • Knowledge and appreciation of the cultural, social and economic needs of Aboriginal people
  • Lived experience as a guardian or knowledge and appreciation of the important role Guardians play in supporting Aboriginal children and young people, and some of the challenges they may experience in this role
  • Ability to work respectfully and effectively with Aboriginal and non-Aboriginal community members and people from Culturally and Linguistically Diverse Communities
  • Self-motivated, confident, honest and flexible
  • Strong professional work ethic
  • Discretion and diplomacy
  • A strong team player
  • Have a current Driver’s Licence, First Aid Certificate and Working With Children Check and are happy to undertake a Criminal Record Check.

Essential Requirements 

  • Identify and are recognised as an Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander person within your community
  • Relevant tertiary qualification in Community Services, Youth Work, Mental Health or related discipline
  • Demonstrated casework/ case management experience working with Aboriginal children and families using a range of approaches including family-focused, Aboriginal child-centred and strengths-based casework 
  • Demonstrated experience in motivating change and supporting social, emotional, and family capacity and resilience building
  • Demonstrated understanding of trauma and trauma-informed/aware practice 
  • Proven commitment to documentation, recording and reporting of client related information in accordance with privacy legislation, organisational policies and procedures, and reporting of service outcomes and achievements
  • Proficient in the use of computers, Microsoft Office Suite and data management systems for case planning, notes, and documents
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills and proven ability to build and maintain relationships 
  • Excellent organisational, time-management and problem-solving skills
  • Proven ability to work autonomously and within a team
  • For all positions we require you to have a current drivers licence, current Working With Children Check, current First Aid certificate, fully vaccinated against COVID-19 and must be willing to undertake and be cleared via a National Police Check through the Mindaribba LALC.  All employees are also required to undergo a medical assessment

Desirable

  •  Degree qualifications in Social Work, Social Science, Psychology, Aboriginal Counsellor or related discipline
  • Lived experience as a Guardian of Aboriginal children and young people.
  • History of working in Aboriginal Communities
