Your Position:

You will be responsible for leading our City Planning Team which will require you to innovate, envision, translate and interpret urban renewal, master plan and place making outcomes into effective planning policy whilst fostering innovation, change and high performance in a progressive, fast paced & community-focused organisation.

Your responsibilities will include but not be limited to:-

  • Visioning, developing, and implementing a quality planning and development framework for the Burwood LGA, which promotes design excellence, active, safe and high-quality spaces.
  • Providing high-level expertise, advice, and direction in preparing and implementing Strategic Land Use, Planning, Development, and Urban Management Strategies, Plans, and Policies.
  • Managing projects, including coordinating and overseeing the work of consultants.
  • Finding planning solutions that consider the natural, built, social, and economic environments.
  • Driving design excellence and creating vibrant spaces.
  • Providing high levels of customer service to all stakeholders.
  • Actively monitoring and managing the team's work and performance.
  • Committing to best practices, continuous improvement, and fostering a great team culture.

To be successful in this role you will have:-

  • Tertiary qualifications in Town Planning or equivalent
  • Extensive working experience as a Strategic Planner
  • Extensive management and leadership experience within a complex, challenging and changing environment
  • Extensive experience in providing high level expertise, advice and direction in preparing and implementing Strategic Land Use, Planning, Development & Urban Management Strategies, Plans and Policies
  • Extensive experience in providing high level expertise, advice and direction in preparing and implementing Environmental Planning Instrument / Local Environment Plan and Development Control Plans changes
  • Extensive experience in project management in relation to developing, co-ordinating and managing projects, including the management of consultants.
  • Extensive experience in applying legislation and processes associated with the NSW planning & development framework, along with the technical aspects of the position, its purpose and accountabilities
  • Knowledge and experience in business practices including corporate planning, budgets, risk management, WHS and reporting
  • Knowledge of change management principles with experience in process, system and team culture improvements
  • Highly developed decision making, time management, customer service, research, analysis and report writing skills
  • Highly developed interpersonal & communication skills with the ability to influence, mediate and negotiate solutions and situationally appropriate outcomes
  • Ability to represent Burwood Council in public forums in a professional and knowledgeable manner
  • Be a forward thinking and solutions focused individual who actively strives for continuous improvement and is capable of leading change and performance improvement
  • Ability to apply Codes of Conduct, EEO, WHS and ethical practice principles whilst always acting with professionalism, integrity and probity

Key Requirements:

  • COVID 19 vaccination for all employees (2 Vaccines)
  • Willingness to complete pre-employment screening which may include: a pre-employment medical examination (including drug & alcohol testing) and National Police check
  • Current NSW Class C Driver's License
  • NSW White Card / General Construction Induction card
  • Appropriate tertiary qualifications in Town Planning and extensive working experience as a Strategic Planner or equivalent
