The Organisation:

Glass Jar Australia (GJA) was founded in 2015 to support communities to drive social change by empowering Aboriginal girls and women. Shooting Stars is an education engagement program that empowers Aboriginal girls and young women to achieve their dreams. Shooting Stars is now based in 22 schools across Western Australia and South Australia, reaching over 1,200 girls and young women. Shooting Stars staff, 85% of whom are Aboriginal, adapt the Shooting Stars program to meet the needs of their community and its participants, providing sport, health and wellbeing sessions, and reward activities within a school-based framework of support, advocacy, and connection

The goal for the Shooting Stars Pathways Coordinator is to prepare and mentor participants for their postschool endeavours; empowering them to make decisions and work toward their post-school pathway goals.

The Pathways Coordinator will lead two key strategies in the Shooting Stars Strategic Plan:

• Create a structured pathways program to transition participants from school into the workforce or further study, including support when women first enter the workforce; and

• Create a self-managed platform for Shooting Stars alumnae to maintain connections and support emerging leaders.

Responsibilities:

  • Developing relationships with year 10—12 Shooting Stars participants to create post-school education and/or employment plans on an individual basis, with assistance from the Shooting Stars Spark Coordinator.
  • Map education and employment opportunities across our areas of interest, building networks across organisations offering education and employment opportunities, and linking participants to those opportunities.
  • Organising and facilitating training, higher education, and employment awareness activities for Shooting Stars year 10—12 participants, including presentations by providers, guest speakers, local employer site visits, and senior leadership camp.
  • Ensuring that year 11 and 12 Shooting Stars participants are ready to graduate and enter the employment and/or tertiary education institutions through securing relevant documentation and coursework e.g. birth certificate, bank account, Tax File Number, other identification, Keys For Life program.
  • Mentoring participants in building relationships with employers and Higher Education providers (and their supports) and providing culturally appropriate intervention where required.
  • Assisting hosts in developing support and resources as required, including culturally appropriate environments and mentor support for employer and employee.
  • Collaborating with organisations who deliver pathway support such as Women In Mining WA, Aspire UWA, WA Aboriginal Leadership Institute, St Catherine’s College. As well as with training providers, universities, employers and partners to identify opportunities for the participants.
  • Role modelling Shooting Stars values alongside relationship building and engagement strategies to other Shooting Stars staff.
  • Ongoing review and assessment of participant performance against their plans.
  • Lead the building the Shooting Stars alumnae program with support from the Operations team.

  • Demonstrated experience in working with at risk, young people in an education, sporting and/or career context
  • A commitment to and experience in advancing Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander participation through provision of services to rural and remote communities
  • Proven relationships with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities
  • Excellent communication and collaboration skills and ability to elicit cooperation from, and work with, a diverse group of people/stakeholders
  • Demonstrated networking skills to build key networks and engage with a diverse group of stakeholder groups
  • High-level ability to effectively plan and prioritise work and maximise the use of internal and external resources to achieve outcomes
  • Competent in the use of Information Technology
  • Ability to work independently and as a part of a broader team
  • Ability to demonstrate initiate and proven leadership skills
  • Demonstrated ability to manage program budgets
  • Preparedness to be flexible in respect to work hours and intrastate travel
  • A current “C” class WA driver’s license

Desirable criteria include:

  • A tertiary degree in a relevant field or experience in a similar position
  • Experience in working in mentoring and employment agencies
  • Experience working within a school or youth organisation
  • Experience coaching/engaging/teaching young people

To work with Shooting Stars you will need to get the following clearances:

  • National Police Clearance dated no more than 3 months prior to commencement date
  • Working With Children Check (WWC Check)
  • Nationally Coordinated Criminal History Check (NCCHC) with screening clearance number (SCN), processed by the Department of Education in Western Australia

Hours of work

  • The role is a full-time max term position working 37.5 hours per week until 31 Dec 2024 (with possible extension dependent on Government funding). The nature of the position requires significant out of hours and weekend work.

Salary

  • A salary package in the range of $75K to $85K including Super and access to salary sacrifice will be negotiated with the successful applicant dependent on level of experience.
