What is the role?

Applications are sought from suitably qualified applicants wishing to be considered for the role of Physiotherapist, SHIELD.

SHIELD provides health and wellbeing services to AFP members. You will be working within a team of experienced and passionate clinicians, health and safety advisors and case managers where you can use your skills and knowledge to enable improved health and wellbeing of your colleagues. This role is a varied and interesting one with regular opportunities for professional development and ongoing learning.

The Physiotherapist (SHIELD) role focuses on helping empower AFP members to take a proactive approach to managing their health and preventing injuries and illness, with a focus on education and preventative programs. The SHIELD Physiotherapist will act in an advisory and consultancy capacity to assist members to recover from injury and guide them in improving their physical performance. The role is committed to providing a high standard of client care and the provision of specialist advice and support.

You will also be required to contribute to the achievement of outcomes in accordance with the regulatory framework, the AFP Code of Conduct and the AFP Governance Instruments. It is expected that the successful applicant will deliver on the core responsibilities and meet any requirements of the position as outlined below.

Please note this role has been advertised in multiple cities however vacancies are in Sydney, Melbourne and Perth. Applicants will need to be based in one of these cities or willing to relocate.

What will you do?

Duties of the role include but are not limited to: 

  • Collaboratively working with Exercise Physiologists and Health & Fitness advisors to monitor and improve employee physical health.
  • Perform functional assessments to identify injury risk and assist with the determination of operational readiness for staff with pre-existing conditions.  
  • Liaising and working within a Multi-disciplinary team of other healthcare professionals, Rehabilitation Case Managers and Work Health and Safety Advisors to encourage a holistic approach to treatment and care.
  • Facilitating group based exercise and education sessions. A strong working knowledge of fatigue, energy and strategies to uplift physical capability is required.
  • Contributing to programs and initiatives that positively influence musculoskeletal health across the wider AFP population.
  • Making assessments of physical conditions to effectively and formally monitor client progress.
  • Formulating treatment plans to address the conditions and needs of the client/s.
  • Provide evidence-based recommendations that inform AFP policy relating to human performance through the collection and interpretation of data, briefing of key stakeholders, and the development of high level technical reports.
  • Providing scope specific contribution to SHIELD early intervention and prevention programs.
  • Contribute to SHIELD efforts to embed a culture of health and safety within the wider AFP.
  • Provide appropriate external referrals to doctors and other medical practitioners (as required).

Essential Requirements

  • You must be an Australian Citizen at the time of application.
  • Current NV1 (Negative Vetting Level 1) (secret) security clearance, or ability to obtain one.
  • Degree in physiotherapy and Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (AHPRA) unrestricted registration as a physiotherapist.
  • Minimum of five years (postgraduate) contemporary experience. 
  • Maintain currency in subject matter expertise through ongoing professional development and learning opportunities outside the formal education process. 
  • Ability to quickly establish effective and authentic rapport.
  • Demonstrated high level emotional intelligence. 
  • Excellent administration and record keeping skills.

Desirable Requirements

  • Current valid Australian driver’s license.
  • Experience working in a multi-disciplinary team in a large organisational setting. 
  • Research experience.  
  • Experience using Microsoft Office products. 
  • Availability to undertake domestic travel (if required). 
  • Post-Graduate Qualifications.
  • Relevant qualification or extensive experience and knowledge in area of expertise.

Additional Information

  • This position is an AFP Band Level 7
  • This position has been advertised in multiple locations however, the role is located in Sydney, Melbourne and Perth. Successful applicants must be willing to relocate.
